Default Can we admit we dont have an avg offense now?

This isnt about 1 or 2 preseason games or 1 or 2 offensive moves. its about a complete lack of talent on the offensive side of the ball.

Its a little more complicated then "wowzers! hill is big and fast! all we need to do is send him deep and defenses will have to respect it and it opens up everything else" heard this so often since the draft. it doesnt work that way. its not that simple.

for one, most teams already play 2 deep coverage the majority of the time. second you can have usane bolt speed on the outside and it wont matter if you cant protect long enough to get the throws off.

i love the philosiphy going back to ground and pound and protecting the ball. but we are just an ok run blocking team with just ok backs. which means, eventually, we will have to throw. and we A) cant pass protect and B) dont have a ton of playmakers and C) have a qb whose biggest issue is consistency.

unfortunetly, none of that is likely to change. tebow or sanchez, wildcat, shotung, ground and pound, whatever. bottom line is we are just ok at qb, just ok at hb, just ok at wr, and poor on the oline

that mix will never work.

we need to bring in someone. soon.

We don't have an average offense. I'm all on board on that one. I don't even think we have a below average offense at this point. I think they flat out stink.

I think they have a chance to get up to below average when Holmes comes back and Sparano's system gets fully absorbed. I don't think they have a prayer of turning into a good offense with this personnel and in that system.

When we begin the Buffalo game with four straight 3 and outs trying to ground and pound, what exactly is the philosophy?

Also considering this team doesnt have a quality punter....you immediately lose the field position battle. The Giants would have won that game 9-0 if Sanchez doesnt throw that pick.

We will put 21 on Buffalo by halftime.

The first four games are not the issue, it's the next 12.

The offense has been playing well against a t 5 defense in practice. Last night in 3rd and more than a half yard they went with 12 personnell repeatedly.

They're holding back. Except for the WFH problem they're fine.

They're gonna be in big trouble. You can't be an average offensive unit when there's not one position that I'd say is above average besides your center. And I'll probably get jumped for saying that by the Holmes people. But I'd make the argument that as a "Number 1" receiver he's well below average.

I'm not all that high on Ryan Fitzpatrick but I think expecting him to throw three pick-6's by halftime is a little bit much.

The first four AREN'T the issue? How do you figure that. If anything the schedule gets more manageable as the season goes on.

I don't think it's fair to say we have a below average or average O yet. It's way to early to predict what we have.

I'm assuming Hobbes means that we expect to lose 3 out of the first 4. It's losing 8 out of the last 12 against crappy competition that's going to be the problem.

The thing that is most concerning is that everyone except the Jets FO and Rex knew replacing hunter was a top priority and they did nothing.

Even after the game Rex still said he found it hard to believe that one guy could be responsible for so many sacks.

Rex is starting to prove the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree. He's a great Defensive Coordinator but he sucks at being a complete head coach.

Maybe he was just trying to cover for Hunter but that doesn't sound like the "new" Rex. Hold Hunter accountable!

Get a blocking tight end, an NFL caliber punter and bring in anyone that can block.

If they do nothing this week to at least show they are trying to repair those 3 positions then they (Rex and Tanny) clearly have their heads stuck up their asses.

whats shocking to me, is that it doesn't really seem to make a difference who the head coach is, or the OC, or the QB. Going back the past 10 years, the Jets have been offensively challenged. Every other team in the league can execute pass plays effectively that takes almost everyone in the pattern 10 to 20 yds beyond the line of scrimmage almost every down. The Jets can only run pass plays 3 to 5 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. Maybe it wasn't Schotty after all.

I think we all expected average, what I have seen so far has not changed my mind at all. This is preseason, no need to worry yet.

21 on buffallo? at halftime? how about we start with a touchdown first.

While I agree with the frustration of the OP and other posters in this thread I would caution a reminder that we have a number of our top WRs injured at the moment. That being said so far the biggest issues have been with our offensive line which looks to be the majority of our starters, so that's a horrible, horrible sign.

I will say that other than the pick I thought Sanchez didn't look to bad out there. He got sacked a bunch of times but that was more the O-line's fault (i.e. WFH) but other than that he was fine. He went 9/11 which is a pretty high completion rate. Manning was 7/14, got three more yards, averaged a yard less and also threw a pick. Manning was also throwing to much better receivers than Sanchez was.

The run game sucked as well at times although a lot of that had to do with the O-line not clearing the way for the runners properly. They even showed one clip where WFH ran right past a defender through the gap into no-mans land instead of double-teaming the defender to make sure the runner got anywhere. That wouldn't have been a bad move on a first and 10 to try and extend the run by clearing the way for the runner but it was one of those 3rd and one or 4th and one situations where all you're trying to do is get that 1 yard.

I think our numbers might be a bit skewed because of our lack of starting receivers but our O-line is still our number one concern. If that doesn't improve we'll be lucky to be average. If the O-line was at least average and not so bad I would say we would have an average or better offense for sure.

here is my thing with holmes. even if he is a #1(which i believe he is a capable lower tier #1), we dont really have anyone else around him. even the best#1's can be contained if you can focus attention to them and not get burned elsewhere.

and if holmes gets hurt, or is slowed, we are F'd.

I'd like to see them play in a game where we see the actual scheme, they actually game plan and we have our starting WR's on the field before I make any decisions. If we're stuck w/Hunter at right tackle my expectations are average at BEST though.

This. Last time we have an average offense was '08 with Favre. I know we were #1 in rushing in '09, but it was still a below avg offense overall.

This wasnt made to be a sanchez bashing thread... and i agree oline is our biggest issue. i was ok with sanchez performance. even with the pick. although with that said, having sanchez be a dink and dunk passer, with his consitency and short accuracy issues at times, seems to be playing to his weaknesses. im not saying throw it 30+ times, but when we throw it, we need more plays that go 8+ yards in the air.

as far as missing many of our "top wideouts" the issue with that is, other then holmes our "top wideouts" are guys who are bench players on other teams. other bad teams. schilens, turner... these are starting impact guys. and hill could be good, but very rare for a rookie WR to make a big impact in year 1.

we need to bring in blockers and playmakers. or else hope tebow can make miracles

Agreed. Obviously, the preseason results have sucked, but I'm reserving judgment until I see an actual scheme in place, and our functioning WR can actually take the field.
