just read a lil article about the mariners owner. the guy has owned the team since 92 and has never seen the team in person.

even when the mariners play in japan this year, he won't be attending.

he's 80+ years old but it's still a strange thing to do as a team owner. no games in 20 years!

Yeah, I saw someone post that on another forum. I'm surprised he doesn't attend the games in Japan, but otherwise it's to be expected. How many English Premier League games do you think their American owners have attended? (like 3 EPL teams are owned by Americans)

i'd have to imagine they'd attend at least one.

it really must be nice to be that rich.. to be able to buy a sports team and not even get around to watching the games.

and yeah, not a fan of the regular season starting in japan. it would've been much better for them to be exhibition games.

That's the best part about being a team owner-- getting to watch your team live and say to yourself "this is MY team".

if i owned a team, all i would do would revolve around the team.

You don't understand. Many of the people buying teams aren't diehard sports fans.

Diehard sports fans generally can't afford to buy teams.

These are extraordinarily wealthy guys whose entire lives were business. They bought the team for an investment, in many cases. Sometimes other reasons. Yamauchi may not even be a baseball fan.

There is nothing to get. It's a peculiar circumstance and is not something that has happened before in american sports.

even if you look at it like an investment, it is still highly unlikely for a business person to purchase a company and then never check it out in person.

Sure there's something to get. He's an old man and probably not a baseball fan. He's clearly not flying to America to see them, so it comes down to whether he makes it his business to come to the games in Japan when they're there every few years.

Like I said, I doubt all the American EPL owners have gone to see their teams.

If they're not a fan of the sport, why would they? They'll be in touch with whoever does the day to day, I assume, but what reason is there to go see them if you don't like the sport?

none of what you're saying is facts. you're just guessing things.

what i mean by there is nothing to get is that this doesn't go any further than the fact that it's a weird thing for a owner to do. we don't know his motivation or what level of interest he has in the team or sport. but he is the only owner of an american sports team that has never attended a game in person. that makes his circumstance out of the ordinary.

everything else is just guesswork. but this is a dumb argument and has nothing to do with anything.

great start for felix and mccarthy, although against pretty weak lineup. ichiro and suzuki showing off for the japanese crowd.
