Default CNN Suspends Roland Martin For Super Bowl Tweets

CNN announced Wednesday that it is suspending Roland Martin in the wake of the pundit's controversial Super Bowl tweets.

The Washington Post's Erik Wemple posted this statement from the network:

“Roland Martin’s tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland will not be appearing on our air for the time being.”
The move came three days after Martin caused an outcry by tweeting that people should "smack the ish" out of any male fans of an underwear ad starring David Beckham. He also made fun of a New England Patriots player who arrived wearing a pink jumpsuit. "He needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass," Martin wrote.

Gay rights groups such as GLAAD accused him of condoning anti-gay violence, and pointed to columns he had written, such as one in which he compared homosexuality to alcoholism. Martin first said that he had merely making fun of soccer players, and then issued an apology of sorts, saying that he regretted "any offense" he had caused.

CNN did not initially make any statement about the controversy, and Martin was on the air for the network's election coverage on Tuesday night.

After news of the suspension broke, GLAAD issued a statement of its own.

"CNN today took a strong stand against anti-LGBT violence and language that demeans any community,” GLAAD spokesman Rich Ferraro said. “Yesterday, Martin also spoke out against anti-LGBT violence. We look forward to hearing from CNN and Roland Martin to discuss how we can work together as allies and achieve our common goal of reducing such violence as well as the language that contributes to it.”

You have now, though, haven't you? Look at his Wiki. The 'Twitter Controversy' section describing what happened on Sunday is almost as long as the section describing his entire existence.

I can't even picture this guy, I keep thinking of Roland Smith, the old NY anchor. I get most of my news from the babes on Fox News, they keep my attention much longer.

People get their news from the TV?

For me, TV is good for sports...That's about it.

Wish I could subscribe to about 20 channels...Instead of the 500 I currently have...

In truth I get most of my news while online, but if I'm watching TV and want news, I'm going with Megyn Kelly or whatever girl Fox has on.

That's like going to a Jets forum for a sensible breakdown of Mark Sanchez's strengths and weaknesses.

It kind of is, because I've already formed my opinion on my own, now I'm looking for some entertainment value.

Knew it.

About Sanchez. I guess the politics too.

Ftr, I think political correctness goes too far.

It is one thing to make fun of people for their immutable characteristics. But to make fun of gay BEHAVIOR should not be off limits.

Same would go for anyone, unless you form your opinions all on what you read here.

No, he was saying that men who displayed positivity toward a commercial meant to stimulate people who are attracted to athletic and gay-friendly entities should have the ish SMACKED out of them. It was a declaration of peace.

In all seriousness, I dont know why so many see it that way. Since when is underwear Ads and wearing Pink Homosexual things? He is a guy who always makes fun of soccer fans and soccer in general. If you want to reach as hard and nitpick as GLAAD then of course you will see him advocating violence against gay but it is not what he was saying. He did not say that at all.

GLAAD likes to defame anyone that it disagrees with. They first request for that person to be fired and then order them to go to one of their meetings. The whole thing is silly and the epic reaching that they continuously do needs to stop.
