Default Jets looking at another RB

Ryan Gilbert.

By MICHAEL MURPHY

Ryan Gilbert didn't hear his name called Sunday, the second day of the NFL draft, but that doesn't mean he won't get a shot at his dream.

Gilbert, who had 1,037 yards and nine rushing touchdowns for the Houston Cougars last season, was working Monday on signing a free-agent deal with the New York Jets.

Gilbert had knee surgery after the season and was unable to work out at either the NFL combine or UH's pro day.

Gilbert leaves May 11 for New York, where he will undergo an extensive physical and hopefully participate in the Jets' mini-camp.

"My knee is good," Gilbert said. "But the doctors wouldn't allow me to work out. I wound up in a good position, because I was able to pick and choose what team I could go to.

"I had other options, like Jacksonville, San Diego and Philadelphia. But after sitting back and looking at the options we had, the Jets were the best team for me."

Also Monday, the Texans signed unrestricted free agent Ephraim Salaam. The 6-7, 295-pound offensive tackle has started 99 NFL games with the Jaguars, Falcons and Broncos.

TSU linebacker Fredrick Brock and Louisiana Tech cornerback Tramon Williams signed free-agent deals with the Texans.

Guard Will Allen, a Cypress Falls product who started 32 games for Texas, got a free-agent deal from the Saints.

Texas Tech safety Dwayne Slay landed a tryout with the Bears; Texas A&M safety Jaxson Appel of Friendswood signed withthe Titans.

Jai Lucas — who starred for George Mason in the NCAA Tournament — got a tryout with the Giants at tight end.

Slay is quality and if the Bears don't take him.........

How are the Jets your best option, when you have Martin, Blaylock, Washington, Houston, and Moore on the roster already?

Maybe because the top of our depth chart had injury issues last year, and Martin isn't going to be a starter for long, and also we are probably going to rush the ball more than most, also to put into account, living in NYC and maybe money

They say hes not good in coverage, but to hell with that with proper coaching he can improve. You cant teach a player to hit lights out.

I would think that's exactly the reason why. An RB who's about to retire, an RB that broke his ankle last year, and 3 unproven backs. You know there's gonna be a ton of competition and this gives him his best chance of proving himself.
