Default Will Marques Douglas be back?

Per the always insightful Rich Cimini:

Quote:
#Jets have kept seat warm for QB Mark Brunell, who will sign Thursday at the earliest. Wouldn't be shocked if DE Marques Douglas re-signs
Will the Jets invite him back into the rotation at DE? Was their goal all along to resign him for less?

My guess is that the Jets told Douglas "try to get a good deal with another team; if you don't, you're welcome back here in late July."

Pure speculation, of course, but the fact that Douglas has been so quiet tells me that he's either retired or a gentlemen's-agreement-Jet.

Of course, Jon Feinsod is his agent, so maybe he's holding out for more money.

he'll sign with us for the veteran minimum most likely......he's a good depth player who knows the system.

I hope he doesn't re-sign.

I want to see what we have in DeVito, Pitoitua, Wright and Kroul. I'd only want him back if most of those players suck in TC or if someone on the DL gets hurt.

Douglas was a big part of teaching the defense to the rest of the DL. I can see him returning as a rotational guy. He isn't a wall, but he still makes plays.

I'd like as many DL guys as possible that know the system.

There is a great chance Kroul or Wright won't match the knowledge or production Douglas can give.

Pitoitua will make the team this year. He's a good depth guy with plenty of upside.

He's not holding out for more money. He'd be lucky to get a job at this stage, so I'd be surprised if he gets more than vets minimum...or close to it atleast.

I've always kind of figured we'd sign him back early in training camp. Our DE depth is interesting, but it never hurts to have a guy like Douglas, a solid rotational guy.

I know that's the risk but I feel like we have to invest in some youth on our DL.

atm we have Ellis, Gholston, DeVito and Pitoitua. I think we'll carry one more DL and I hope it's Wright...

Nothing against Douglas, I was a big supporter of his last year, but I think we have some talent on our DL that's waiting to be given a chance.
I'm sure Rex will know what to do... if he sees the talent he'll go with it... otherwise he'll bring DOuglas back. It's win-win.

no point in not bringing him back in for TC imo.

If the young guys show they are ready, Douglas gets cut, and if they arent ready, we have douglas there who is solid and ready to roll.

If it's between Douglas and Wright I'd rather have Douglas. Wright hasn't played professional football in over a year and Douglas knows Rex's defense. That knowledge isn't as paramount as it was last season but I'd rather keep Scott, Leonhard, and Douglas on the team as long as possible.

He's a backup QB, you're not supposed to be excited about that guy. If you get excited about a backup QB it means your starting QB is probably shit

Rodrique Wright (defensive tackle)

Frame and Strength: Charles Barkley has nothing on Rodrique Wright. Wright is just plain big. He?s broad-shouldered with a tree trunk for a lower body. To think that he?s only going to get stronger is frightening. Grade: 10

Quickness: Wright is oftentimes the first guy off of the ball. He rarely lets his blocker beat him to the point of attack. He?s not the fastest guy you?ll see of the ball, but he?s much quicker than most. And he has to be, he?s so often double-teamed that he would be a non-factor in most games if he didn?t have the quickness that he has. Grade: 8

Agility: This is a strong point for Wright. Rarely does a guy his size move around so well and so naturally, especially between the tackles. He doesn?t have the all-out speed and agility to make many plays outside the tackles. Grade: 7

Tenacity and Toughness: Wright plays hard. He?s not someone who just gets by with his overwhelming size and strength and athletic ability. Grade: 9

Playmaking Ability: It took about five plays against Houston North Shore to understand exactly why most people think that the sky is the limit for Wright. His spin move against a run that was away from his side of the ball was a thing of grace and beauty (if those adjectives can apply to a defensive tackle). The move put him square into what would have been a vacant hole. Once there, he then dumped the running back to the ground in a show of brute force. Grade: 9

Overall: 42 out of 50

The highest scoring player at the defensive tackle position last year was yet another Texan, Tommie Harris, who is now at Oklahoma. Harris scored a 45 (7, 10, 10, 8, 10).

Wright is a different type of player than Harris. If you?re looking for a comparison to Wright, then first-round pick former Longhorn Casey Hampton is more appropriate.
Here's a rather brimming scouting report of Rodrique Wright but there's probably a reason why he hasn't done anything in the NFL so far. Of course, Wright did have to cope with Nick Saban being his coach and then defecting to Alabama. If there's anything in there, Rex will bring it out.

Well, ask Drew Brees about him, he rants and raves about how Brunell has really helped him in his career.
