Default The Open Championship Thread

The 3rd Major of the season has just started about half hour ago and I am pulling an all-nighter since two of my favorite golfers are on the course in Tiger Woods and Camilo Villegas, both paired with Justin Rose. My other guy Ian Poulter also playing now!

Masters - Mickelson
US Open - McDowell
The Open - ??

Tiger has had his time to get rounds in and he loves this course. He was made the favorite and we'll see if he can get #15.

I hope to see him chip on the green again!

Go DALY!

Tiger shot 67 and easily could've been a 65. Missed a birdie putt within 5 inches.

He switched putters. No more of the Scotty Cameron putter that has done so much for his career..

Switched to Nike.

I don't get the name.

Why not The British Open instead of The Open?

I've heard it called both ways, but it's just confusing this way.

That's what happens when you're first by a long time (35 years before the US Open) - you get to call it what you want. See World Series, for example.

I see Mickelson has probably already played himself out of any chance. No surprise, but still disappointing.

ok, didn't realize that.

What do you mean by World Series? As opposed to other sports?

I'm saying that around the world people could say that it should be called the Baseball World Series, or the North American Baseball World Series (put aside the whole "World" thing), but since baseball came up with the name first, they could call it whatever they wanted. People around the world have made fun of it for decades (since it only involves almost all American teams), but too bad - anyone else who wants to call something the "World Series" has to put a qualifier in front of (Caribbean, Little League) or behind (of Poker, of Golf) it, since there's no question what THE World Series is.

What is so great about St Andrews? Big deal it was the birth place of golf, it looks like a bombing range and what's up with the fun house greens...

I think that's pretty cool to be honest. Huge fan of these greens.

McIlroy to no surprise held the 1st round lead.

John Daly at 6 under is a huge surprise. He won this tournament in the early 90's.

Woods,Westwood, and Yang are 5 under for other notables.

I believe it is such a big deal because of the players that have
won at St.Andrews. If you look at the list of people you will see names
such as (Jones, Snead, Nicklaus, Ballestros, Faldo, Daly and Woods).
The Open Championship is the most challenging major out of the 4. The
fairways are just as fast as the greens and its so tough to get the ball to
hold on the greens. The players are fortunate that it rained a little
bit so the greens are somewhat holding now. Let it be sunny and no rain the next few days and see how well the players get the ball to "stick".

Or wait until it's blowing a gale, as it usually is, and see how the scores go.
Yesterday's fine conditions were an exception.

So true, look how the players cant even make those short putts. Tiger
has already 3 putted on back-to-back holes. I Just hope my man(John Daly)
can get back in the action and get down to at least -6.

This is what makes this golf course so hard. I can't imagine trying to play in 30 mph winds. Ridiculous.

They stopped play this morning for some time due to the gusts.

I don't know if everyone will get their whole round in.

A lot of really bad scores being posted, including a handful of guys double digits over par today.

Looks like Els is going to miss the cut and Watson is going to come close. Tiger is right in this one and I think Phil will probably make a small run tomorrow (depending on the weather) to get back into it. I will be shocked if the leader stays there for the next 36 holes and I expect there to be 7-8 players within 2-3 strokes of the lead for the final round with some big names up there.

Mickelson is 12 strokes back in a tournament that he has done poorly in his entire career, other than once (in 2004). I'd be amazed if he gets back in it. I wouldn't be surprised if Woods ends up in the top 10 (or even top 5), but just as was the case in the first two majors, I'll be surprised if he actually gets in real contention.

I would really like to see John Daly win this won. He won it once
already and it would really prove that he still has his game. I believe
he's the guy with the most to prove out of anyone playing. If he doesn't
win, then i would like to see Lucas Glover or Sean O'Hair win.
