NORMAN — The next time Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham plays in a football game, it will be in the NFL.

Gresham, out this entire year after undergoing surgery to repair cartilage damage in his knee, will declare for the 2010 NFL Draft after this season.

"Jermaine’s going to go into the draft,” coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday.

Gresham, despite being a senior, had the option of coming back to OU for another season, since he played as a true freshman in 2006 and still had a redshirt year available.

He had considered entering the draft last year, but decided to return to school even though most draft analysts projected that he would be a first-round pick.

Gresham injured the knee on Sept. 1, the week of the season opener against Brigham Young. After sitting out that first game, doctors determined that Gresham would require season-ending knee surgery to stitch the cartilage back together.

Doctors estimated Gresham’s recovery time would be about five months. If Gresham is able to stick by that timetable, he has a chance to be healthy for the NFL’s Scouting Combine in late February.

Despite playing only three seasons, Gresham will go down as the most prolific tight end in Sooner history. While earning All-America honors last season, he caught 66 passes for 950 yards and 14 touchdowns, the second-most touchdown receptions by any player in school history.
Jermaine Gresham obviously took a huge gamble by returning for his senior season instead of entering the draft last year. He would've been the first tight end off the board had he come out in 2009...

This injury will cost him millions of dollars. I honestly thought he'd take a medical redshirt and return for another year at Oklahoma.

On ESPN earlier, Todd McShay was saying that a lot of underclassmen and draft eligible players are scared of a potential rookie salary cap. McShay believes a lot of juniors will enter the 2010 draft.

I bet he is pissed he didn't come out last year, then again, there is a good chance he might have been taken by the bills so maybe he is happy about that.

He's going to have plenty of time to recover and should be pretty much healthy by the time the combine comes around. I think he'll still be the top tight end taken.

Arizona's Rob Gronkowski, who he's right behind Gresham as 2010's top tight end prospect, is also out for the season. He'll probably stay in school...

BYU's Dennis Pitta is making a pretty good case for being the top tight end selected. He reminds me of guys like Todd Heap and Dallas Clark.

So where do people think he'll go?

I'd love for us to get him if he drops out of the 1st.

Gresham should have come out last year, just like Bradford, just like everyone else that's a lock to be a first round pick. No idea why some of these guys go back to school. I know, they like the college experience, that's bogus. Being a millionaire > frat parties.

I don't know if Gresham goes in the first round or not, I'd say right now he's on the border, but has to test out really well. If I had to pick at this moment I'd say that round 1 is TE-less.

I was really disappointed when Gresham got hurt. He's a player that is fun to watch. I still have hope that Gresham will be drafted in Rd 1, he has too much talent. I know it's "buyer beware". Some team may be willing to grab him in late rd 1. Green Bay at 20, Cincy 23, or Minny 26 are possible targets.

Medical advances are amazing and there is no reason he won't fully recover.

Well, sad but not too sad. Seeing as right now the Jets look to be picking in the later half of the rounds they will draft in having the potential of some talent falling to us because of injury would be a good thing for our team. Gotta keep an eye on our future a bit

The team who will look big time at this guy is probably either a Miami or a Kansas City(Maybe with the Gonzo pick). Maybe Cleveland too.
