Jets | Offensive line moves could impact Pennington's decision
Tue, 21 Feb 2006 18:29:21 -0800

Ken Berger, of Newsday, reports the moves the New York Jets make with their offensive line could impact QB Chad Pennington's decision to return to the team. While it's too early to write off Pennington, who ultimately might instruct his agent, Tom Condon, to stop playing hardball, it's difficult to imagine him attempting a comeback behind an offensive line that doesn't include OC Kevin Mawae, OT Jason Fabini and OG Pete Kendall.

A Mawae trade would only lead to a mid round pick, but still worth it I guess...

I don't see Pennington wanting to come back either. He should take his chances on the FA market...

Robertson should restructure...

So your trading Mawae for a 3rd round pick? Assuming they can't sign him.

It'd be great if we could get a pick of value for Mawae.

I'm also not surprised to hear about Robertson, he definitely has to restructure.

3rd round pick would be VERY useful.

Not sure what Mawae would command in the trade market. He's still a serviceable vet, who can probably still maintain a pro-bowl level of play, but no one's going to give up too much for someone 30+ years old. Maybe some team who's on the cusp of a big playoff push will be willing to part with a mid-round pick.

I'm also glad to hear Robertson is restructuring. He's a solid player, but not worth that big of a contract.

The mpost we will get for Mawae is a 5th rounder. He's just too old, too expensive and is coming off a major injury.

If Mawae is cut or traded, we save 1.13M. However, we can't deal him until 3/3, which means we have to get under the cap with his 4.5M. He carries 3.3M of dead cash if cut/traded.

He'd cost 2.8M in 2006 to any team that dealt for him.

So no trades can happen until March 3rd?

They may resturcture Robertson. He should be the #1 cantidate to restructure. There is no way he is producing at the price we are paying him.

Mawae is too old to have any trade value. We'd be looking at a 4th round pick.

Mawae is a constant pro bowler, maybe pickup a 2nd rounder.

This just disgusts me. I'm not mad at the team because I know they are in cap hell and Mawae is falling off anyway, but just the whole situation in general. To see Mawae end his Jets career getting traded for a second day draft pick. It is not a good time to be a Jets fan

This post made me get this weird feeling that we'll have about 3-4 new offensive linemen, a new QB, a new half starting RB....wow

I would like to hear from anyone how they think that MAWAES play is falling off?

Is Willie Roafs? Is Will SHields?
Why is everyone so adamant that he is not a great player anymore. This is not Madden where you can trade you players at their twilight because you might pickup a stud in the draft.

I understand the cap implications but people are talking about Mawae as if he is on the same playing field with Kendall and Fabini

He's not far off - in the games he played last year he appeared to me to be soft and decidedly lightweight in comparison to the guys he was up against. He isn't able to power through defensive lines as witnessed by years of failure in short yardage running plays. (Though admittedly this is a generalisation, it's not all Mawae's fault.)
