He won't be replacing Tom Brady(notes) as the actual captain of the New England Patriots, but Elton John will be the team's honorary captain when the Patriots play the Bucs in Tampa Bay in the regular season.

From the Boston Herald's "Tracked Down" feature:

Sir Elton John schmoozing a posse of New England Patriots and his BFs Robert & Myra Kraft in the Gillette Stadium owner’s box before his sold-out show with Billy Joel. (Elton let it slip that he’ll be the Pats’ honorary captain when Tom Brady & Co. take on Tampa Bay at London’s Wembley Stadium Oct. 25) . . .

What does it mean to be an honorary captain? I'm not sure. I think it means that Elton John will be calling all of the offensive plays for the Patriots in the first half. I think he also has to serenade Tom Brady with a special rendition of "Tiny Dancer" just before kickoff. Hold him closer, Elton.

What the frig does that even mean? That's not only unnecessary, it's downright embarrassing. Besides, if you threw a football to Elton John, it would turn into "Oh, my nose!" quicker than sh*t.

I agree, whatever happened to football. Why the hell do you need an honorary captain? Let alone Elton John. I can understand if it was some kid with cancer or tubascular critosis. Next thing we'll see is Rip Taylor providing honorary paper sprinkles for the Dolphins.

They have honorary captains all the time at NFL games. The only difference with this one is someone decided it was somehow newsworthy and wrote about. Usually nobody even notices.
