One blanket phrase that’s always caused me trouble is “common sense.”

I could search the board and find examples, but its use is so frequent that that’s not necessary. I could also get a number of lines from Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations, but that isn’t necessary either.

When I’ve ask friends about the meaning of “common sense” in the past, they’ve often joked (at least I hope they were joking) “You wouldn’t know. You don’t have any.”

Anyway, I would never forget my history professor from my freshman year at FAU once said, “Common sense is my sense; orthodoxy is mydoxy.” It’s amazing how this has lodged in my memory for all these years.

Question for Debate:

What is common sense?

Common Sense well its all debatable to all cause to each one its their own and everyone is different. Well to me its knowing the difference between right and wrong whether it be law enforcable or something stupid like taking out the trash . example its Sunday night the trash needs to go to the curb but you are too tired to do it well . Its MOnday morning and the garbage truck just passed your house well common sense says do it Sunday Night now the trash will pile high for the week .
Well that might not be the correct answer but this is an oppionated question its like asking Which Super Bowl winning team is better everyone will have their own answer while each one is correct in its own sense their will be no truely correct answer cause to each is his own .

I'd put money down that Common Sense is the most misused term in the English language, next to '6 inches'. And I've noticed in personal experience that a lot of the people that bitch about people not having common sense are in fact the ones sorely lacking.
