United Football League to kick off in October

Dave_tiny by Fooch on Feb 9, 2009 11:29 AM PST in News Comment 28 comments

A while back rumors began circulating about the opening a new league called the United Football League. Well, it appears this new league is going to kick off this October. The league will kick off with four franchises located in seven cities (no that's not a typo). They are Las Vegas/Los Angeles, New York/Hartford, Orlando and San Francisco/Sacramento. If I'm reading it correctly, that would mean the SF/Sacto team would play games in both San Francisco AND Sacramento. For now they're indicating they'll play their SF games at AT&T Park. While odds are probably high it will fail, it might actually be a decent business decision to play games in multiple locations. It keeps any interest relatively fresh.

According to the Sports Business Journal, the husband of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is leading an investment group that will spend approximately $30 million on the four franchises. They're looking at the 2009 season as their soft opening before a full-scale 2010 season. The first season will start in October and after a 6-week season, culminate with a championship game over Thanksgiving weekend.

The most interesting aspect of teh SBJ article was at the very end:

Vuono and Huyghue said the NFL continues to offer assistance and cooperation in areas like officiating. With the demise several years ago of NFL Europa, the NFL could treat the UFL as a minor league.

The UFL ultimately will try to regionalize its teams so they are affiliated with specific NFL clubs.

Apparently Pelosi (Mr. not Nancy) was Paul Tagliabue's roommate at Georgetown so I'd imagine that gives him a tiny bit of pull with Der Kommissar now. There are plenty of players who end up out of football by the end of training camp, so why not have another opportunity for them? No league will ever be able to compete on the same level as the NFL, so the next best bet is either come up with something unique (like what was Arena Football) or try and get yourself in as the minor league.

Up to this point, college football has been the minor league for the NFL. If a league could develop into an affiliate league, you might have a better option on top of the practice squad. You get the non-roster folks a chance to compete and show their stuff outside of just practice. I don't know if it will ever work out, but I think there's definite value in it.

Four teams will play in fall, with Fassel, Green, Haslett, Cottrell as coaches

The fledgling United Football League, set to play in four cities beginning in October, will officially announce its four head coaches at a press conference in San Francisco on Wednesday.

In addition to former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel, who will lead the Las Vegas team, the UFL has hired Dennis Green as San Francisco's coach, Jim Haslett for Orlando and Ted Cottrell for New York. All except Cottrell have been head coaches in the NFL.

It is also believed the league is trying to have former NFL quarterback Michael Vick play in its inaugural season. Vick is scheduled to be released from prison in May but faces a suspension from the NFL for his conviction related to dogfighting.

I agree they should start their season in april and end in say Sept. That way the NFL could send some players there and they would be able to be in shape when the nfl needs them.

If they're going to try this, why not work something out with the CFL, and expand the league? Or team with the Arena league and make one league?

I've always been in favor of a "minor-league" for football, but this idea sounds worse than the XFL.

I wouldnt mind a AAA version of baseball in football. Have farm teams for the professionals.

Yea but it doesn't really work like the baseball minors. Plus a lot of the systems used in college games don't really work in the NFL. It would give a chance to players to prove that they can play in a NFL styled system. Practice squads are kind of useless imo.

Has anyone heard about this league prior to the press release yesterday? Interesting idea that never seems to pan out. RIP USFL, World League, XFL.

New York somehow landed on Ted Cottrell as it's head coach? That teams outlook just got a lot shittier.

it depends when the games are played. if they play games on weeknights i bet they could find some type of tv audience. i know i would watch football on a tuesday night over random tv shows, if the level of play was decent.

In its "Premiere" year, the UFL will host teams in Las Vegas, New York, Orlando and San Francisco. There are also plans to play additional games in Hartford and Los Angeles. The season will culminate with a Championship Game tentatively scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend in Las Vegas. AT&T Park is the first stadium announced for the UFL's "Premiere" season. League officials are in final negotiations with the other stadiums and these agreements will be announced as they are completed. The UFL previously announced that VERSUS, a national sports network in more than 75 millions homes, will dedicate over three hours weekly for a live national HD broadcast of UFL games airing primarily on Thursday evenings.

Perfect let's host the championship game on the weekend of Thanksgiving where the NFL plays on Thursday and College football is in full steam, good choice......

thursday works. espn sometimes has a decent college game on, but the more football the better.

the championship game scheduling is a mistake, but it is tentative so maybe it gets moved.

How about investing in a USFL team? May as well set your money on fire in front of your wife? How does that conversation go?

well if the nfl is actually on board with this league as a "minor league" of sorts this could have some staying power.
