Default Seattles revenge Burleson offer sheet

Seahawks | Burleson offer sheet details
Fri, 24 Mar 2006 15:35:55 -0800

Updating a previous report, Mike Sando, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports the Seattle Seahawks' offer sheet to Minnesota Vikings WR Nate Burleson is a seven-year, $49 million deal with $5.25 million guaranteed. The deal also includes two poison pills guaranteeing the entire $49 million if he plays a certain number of games in the state of Minnesota, or if his average-per-year exceeds the average of the highest-paid running back on the team. The pills are in direct retribution for the contract the Vikings used to sign former Seahawks OLG Steve Hutchinson.

I love the part about 'if he plays games in Minnesota'.

???

Why did they give Burleson that much, I know they wanted to get back at the Vikings, but Burleson was TERRIBLE last year. If they had that kind of money to spend, why didn't they just keep Hutchinson. If they did that just to get back at them, that's a terrible move, because they completely overpaid.

Burleson is still young and can be a great #2 or #3 reciever, and had a very good 04, but that's a lot to pay for someone who had one good year.

You missed the point. The later years of the contract, which he will never see with Seattle, are horribly inflated. If Minnesota matches, they will be stuck with those horrible years guaranteed.

Burleson was terrible last year because he was banged up. With Darrell Jackson, Jerramy Stevens, and the scores of options that Hasselbeck would have, Burleson would be a great pickup.

Amazing, so it's abotu 5.25 million deal that can be higher if they want, but if Minnesota matches it's the full deal, all guaranteed

Burleson is definately a good WR. I just don't know if he's worth all that money, but this whole Seattle-Minnesota free agent mumbo jumbo is interesting.

AHAHAHAHAHA I love the part about the games in Minnesota. You realize eventually the NFL is going to have to come and start outlawing some of these poison pills.

It'd be even funnier if the Vikings matched the offer sheet, then cut him right before he reached the games played in Minnesota milestone.

This was ingenous because it forces Minny to redo thier RB #'s to avoid one posion pill and then avoid him playing in Minny for the other. The best part is if they void the deal (they being the league) then couldn't the seahawks argue the points used agaist them for the Hutch deal

According to rotoworld.com the deal is truly 4 year $14 million with a 5 mil signing bonus, a bargain for a WR like Burleson (look at what Givens/Randle-El got). The rest is just stuff to prevent Minny from matching and showing the NFL their feelings about these poison pill contracts.

They would also have to pay one of their RB's more than Alexander or it would be guaranteed. The league ruled that Seattle wasn't allowed to restructure Walter Jones contract to get by that rule, so Minny can't either.
