I'm old School. Put me down for "Master of Reality" by Black Sabbath as the best Album. As for song, "Highway Star" by Deep Purple.

I gotta go with "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" by Iron Maiden for the album and "Hallowed be thy Name" for the best song.
However, some great choices in here so far. |

I can only pick 2 albums. Type O Negative-Slow,deep and Hard and QUeensryche-Operation Mindcrime. Those are my personal favorites, but probably wouldnt even be in the running for best metal album ever.
Best song would probably be Ozzy-Crazy Train. |

"I Don't Know" by Sabbath Live with Randy Rhoads for best song. Best Album i'm not to sure about- i'll be Lazy and go with Vol 3: (The Subliminal Verses) by Slipknot for now. Might be changed later.

I'll second the "Back in Black" as best album.
With and honorable mention to "Appetite for Destruction"...although some would argue it is not metal. It is impossible to single out one song, but I'll throw out "Love Removal Machine" by The Cult (another arguable as metal) as one unlikely to be mentioned by others. With regard to all the Metallica comments, I have to say that prior to their self titled album, they were perhaps the best metal band ever....every album and LP was as perfect as they come (the "....and Justice for All" tour was fantastic). Then, I don't know what the hell happened....they changed their style and betrayed much of what made them great. I will never forgive them for truncating "Master of Puppets" in concert. I'm not even a pure metalhead (I've got Slayer, and ABBA, the Grateful Dead all in my music library)...but they really disappointed me.

Back then it was called "Hard Rock" but, they were listed as such along with Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, etc so I consider them Early Heavy Metal artists. If you really want nit pick terminology, then the only music that we could talk about is mid 90' and beyond. Kinda limits the conversation, don't you think? Now if you don't agree, how would you classify Deep Purple? Other than the Speed/Death Metal bands listed, wouldn't that term cover most pre 90's bands? Now the only one that I'd disagree with is Jeff Becks "Truth" which I consider more Jazz Fusion But Jeff is one of my favorite Guitar players so...

Great album! But if you told Joey or Keith Caputo they made a heavy metal album, they'd get pissed. It falls under hardcore punk.

i guess i don't know my music classifications very well. for me it's rock, metal, classic rock and punk. if i had to put LOA in one of those categories, it has to be metal. sorry if i've offended the band!
