Default F*ck. I hate doctors.

So, I've been having trouble sleeping for a month now. Among the symptoms is a recurring nightmare that I've been having for years (once every couple of months) happening several times in this short timespan. Insomnia up the ass, etc. I went to my doctor today and she recommended a high dosage of Melatonin, she says, 5mg, more if need be.

CVS only had 3mg tabs, so I took two of them with dinner. While waiting for some well-earned sleep, I decided to read up on the hormone Melatonin.

Side effects in high dosages (especially > 3mg) include vivid dreams and nightmares.

This recurring nightmare freaks me out for days at a time and feels like real life in every way possible. AND THIS SHIT IS GOING TO MAKE IT MORE VIVID?!

I'm going to kill my doctor. But first, for the first time in a month, instead of spending the night trying to sleep, I will be trying to stay awake as much as possible.

Help?

Isnt a bad doctor called a quack?

Anyways, you have to tell us what the recurring dream is that you are having. Maybe jeto will see it and offer her unique analysis.

Drink yourself to sleep. Hopefully you'll be dream-free then.

All my liquor is in my room at school, not here.

I've had it since high school. Some things change but it is always the same otherwise. Typical horror movie stuff, but while I love horror and action movies, these nightmares leave me sitting in a corner wide eyed for hours wishing I had a knife or a gun.

The setting is always school. First it was my high school, then it was my last school, now its my current college. I'm trapped in a room. Sometimes there is someone there, usually there isn't someone else there. The person is just someone random I know, and they never do anything except hide in the room with me. They ask if we should leave one time and tell them not to. Something always kills everyone at the place. Monsters, murderers, dinosaurs a la Jurassic Park, zombies, vampires, wolves once, the means of the deaths changes and is irrelevant. There are the screams of everyone around me and I want to do something but I can't. So all I do is hide. The bulk of the dream is listening to the screams, listening to the killers walk around and seeing it happen through the windows. The dream ends the same way every time. Noise outside the door, the door is slashed down, I wake up in a cold sweat breathing heavily, scanning the room and looking for sharp objects to defend myself with. I just had the nightmare again the other night and I can still envision the claws slashing through the door in front of me and the screeching coming from behind it. It doesn't matter that it's a different door. It's where I am now.

One time a while back the dream was different. I got away. I left the room. I walked through the woods by my dorm at the time, trying to get to the road. I was able to see it when I died.

Psychoanalyze away. I can't think of anything else to pass the time.

Yes. As a matter of fact, that's the only thing the nurse wrote down before the doctor came in, so it should have been reinforced in the doctor's mind when she asked about it and I explained it again. That bitch.

Before i even read the dream part, i looked up melatonin and read a couple of sites blurbs on it.

The vivid dreams are a "rare" side effect. and the most likely effect of taking it is sleepiness. Some report being drowsy the following day.

A lot of what is fucking with you is obviously in your head- for the immediate short term (tonite), you need to try to get your head right and buy into the idea that this is going to work for you tonite. A positive attitude that you are going to sleep well, and will not be in fear of what is going to happen when you put your head on the pillow.

If you havent exerted yourself today- its too late to exercise, but you could go for a brisk walk, get some air, clear your head and get your heart pumping, so it will rest better when you sleep. Dont eat any chocolate of take caffiene. Sit quietly and meditate for a few minutes to clear your overworked brain of static thoughts. If you have trouble falling asleep, read in bed until you are drowsy. Put the radio on really low if you want.

Call me in the morning.

I'm two hours of driving away from my source whom I haven't spoken to in over six months. I don't think she'd appreciate my sudden stopping by. Beyond that I stopped taking the shit.

A typical prescribed dosage would be 2-4 micrograms. The body makes an average of 85 micrograms in a day. I was told to take at least 5 milligrams and took 6 milligrams (2x3 milligram pills). I read the vivid dreams being in high dosage, so maybe my source was off.

Snorting coke of bitch’s tits is way better than sleeping.

And – you can’t sleep because you have nightmares? What in the hell? I don’t think I’ve had a dream since I was 11…that’s when I started drinking.

I can't sleep period. For the past month I've just been lying down in the dark only falling asleep hours later at 4-5am and on the rare occasions that I do fall asleep before then, I wake up every 45-60 minutes and sometimes can't fall back asleep once I wake up. The nightmare becoming more common is just something apparently tacked on to piss me off.

You’re fixating on sleeping too much. I sleep three hours on a good night – you’ll have plenty of time to sleep once you’re dead.

when I owned my limo business a few years back – I would go two, three, four days without sleeping at all…you get used to it.

Maybe the inability to get into a deep sleep is what's causing the nightmares? You mainly dream when you are entering and exiting the normal deep sleep state in REM mode each way. If you are in REM mode much more often during the night that gives you a much greater chance to dream and to have a particular dream surface more often.

As to the psychoanalysis I have no clue. I had a recurrent dream when I was late teens and early twenties where I was trapped in a small room that I recognized as my grandmother's attic bedroom. The room was very small (as it was in real life) and I could not stand up straight without hitting my head on the eaves. The part that was scary though was that the doorway into the room, which was half height in real-life - forcing one to bend over to get into the room, was about a tenth that size in the dream, making it nearly impassable. I'd try to squirm out through the 6 inch high opening and I'd get trapped halfway. That's invariably when I woke up in a cold sweat.

I had the dream all through my junior and senior years in highschool and my college years. After I left school for a fulltime job the dream went away, never to return. I think it was a rite of passage dream. I felt confined and trapped by my circumstances in school, which was true at the time, and as soon as I resolved that and took full control the dream vanished.

I'm not going to tell you about the dream with the bloodthirsty succubi draining my juices every night... Oops.
