Default Dolphins ready to trade #1 draft pick

After a miserable 1-15 season, the Dolphins know they've got a lot of holes to fill. Now new GM Jeff Ireland is basically saying that he's ready to trade the No. 1 pick in this year's draft in order to fill some of those big gaps. He told the NFL Network:

"We're open for business." And why not? What 22-year-old can save this team next season? (Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel)

Looks like they don't have anymore monkeys running the show. Honestly this is the best thing they can do.

I'm sure every team in the top 5 has interest in trading down, problem is who is trading up and for who are they trading up for? Unless Miami wants to take alot less value than the top pick is worth I think they will be stuck making the top pick and what a bad year it is to do so.

Trade the Jets' picks the 1st Rd., th 4th Rd., and 7th Rd. plus next year's 2nd Rd. pick for Miami's 1st Overall pick and next year's 4th Rd. pick...............

Ahhhh what the hell. This trade will never happen between division rivals.

Seriously man? Are you crazy? We need as many draft picks as possible. If anything we better be trading down.

I see a new award next year , insane post of the year.

This is going to come down to nerve on opening day of the draft. Plenty of right guard

The jets are going to be the 3rd best team in the AFCE.... this is going to suck.

Pick Chris Long first overall. Use the 2nd rounder to pick-up either Quentin Groves or Derrick Harvey. Frank Okam or Offensive Line help in the 3rd Rd. Best player available in rounds 5 and 6.

In addition to the moves mentioned above, be aggressive in upgrading the Offensive Line via Free Agency. Pay Faneca and Stacey Andrews their money.

C. Long at RDE and Groves or Harvey at ROLB would perk up the Defense more than Gholston at the 6th pick and the best available player in the 2nd round. Add to that an Offensive Line that can protect Penny and open holes for Jones and Washington and you have what the Jets community has been looking for.

Please engrave my name on that award trophy now.........

just no... first, long is a olb in the pros in the 3-4 secondly, trading away next years second would be pretty stupid because there is no way we are one year away from being a contender.

We too have the same problem as the phins , more holes than picks. take into account our lack of picks last year , giving up picks this year is an absolute no no! Even if that does mean quality.
You may well turn out to be right , but I think its unlikely.

If you think that Chris Long is an "OLB in the pros", then perhaps you ought to review his stats. He is 6'4" 280lbs......one inch shorter and five pounds heavier than his Dad. All the pub that he's received for his senior season was earned while playing DE in a 3-4. THERE IS NO OTHER 3-4 DE IN THIS DRAFT THAT COMBINES SIZE, SPEED, MOTOR, TECHNIQUE, DESIRE, LEADERSHIP AND TANGIBLE PERFORMANCE ACHIEVEMENTSS THAN CHRIS LONG.

I sincerely doubt that Miami would even consider any offers from a division rival, this is more wishful thinking than anything else.

HYPOTHETICAL: if you had the chance to pick-up a Bruce Smith for the price of a 4th and the following year's 2nd rounder, would you do it?

Don't know about you but getting two All-Rookie Defensive players with the upside of Revis and Harris who happens to perfectly fit the 3-4 Defense is well worth the cost of the additonal picks that we had to give up.

If anything, the only thing that I would criticize the FO's for last year was its lack of aggressiveness in acquiring veteran help to off-set the loss of Kendall.

3rd? Buffalo has already proven they're better than us, at least right now.

They can't just say "we want an extra 2nd with the 3rd overall pick this year and an extra 1st next year" and automatically trade down. There has to be a marquee player out there that someone below the 'phins wans AND the team that wants that player must believe that one of the teams very close to the Dolphins will snatch him up if they don't. I don't really see that happening with this class.

And just in case someone was thinking of mentioning it, if a team decides to just not pick in during their time on the clock (like the vikes did a few years back) they still have to pay the same slot money to whoever they sign. Having a top 5 pick is often more a curse than a good thing, I'd say if the Dolphins want to save more cap space they should take a low profile guy he fits their system.

If anything right now is an excellent time to trade up because the pattern right now seems to be shifting towards trading down to stockpile picks, which is a very wise thing to do, but once everyone starts doing it some great steals can be made without giving up a ton to trade up.

Trading up like that after last year's draft would be Mike Tannenbaum's death warrant.

I think I should have established the premise that in conjunction with the "trade" with Miami, the FO should be aggressive in bolstering the Offensive Line in Free Agency.

Many of you, I believe, may be a little too focused in improving the team's lot mainly through the draft. Although that may be a sound strategy in a place where they actually show you some patience and give you three years or so to re-build a team, that approach may not sit too well in the NY market. Parcells et al may have this luxury courtesy of Wayne Huizenga (sp?) but a NY team never has or will ever have it so easy.

Now, if this "trade" produces a 3-4 defense that is enhanced with the addition of Chris Long (with Miami's pick) at RDE, Groves or Harvey at ROLB (with our own 2nd rounder) and either the DL interior made stouter by Okam or our Offensive Line's depth is improved with our own 3rd round pick then what's not to like about the trade?

Chris Long, from his track record, measurables, bloodlines and his intangible attributes, is probably the closest thing to a no-risk prospect that we've seen in a long time.

As such, I really don't see a strong argument presented here in this thread against this "trade" unless, of course, Chris (deep down inside) really wants to be Christine and is just angling to make the most money so that he can get the operation that she's always wanted.

Lastly..........long live Tannenbaum!!!
