The Kansas City Star reports that Chiefs coach Herm Edwards has fired several offensive assistant coaches, including most notably offensive coordinator Mike Solari.

Also dumped were offensive line coach John Matsko, receivers coach Charlie Joiner, and running backs coach James Saxon.

Solari, Joiner, and Saxon were members of Dick Vermeil's staff. The Star says that former Chiefs and Jets offensive coordinator Paul Hackett could be a candidate to replace Solari. (But Hackett currently is the quarterbacks coach in Tampa, and unless his contract expires after the season he won't be available; the Bucs aren't keen on letting assistants leave.)

Quarterbacks coach Dick Curl (insert adolescent snicker here) and tight ends coach Jon Embree were the only offensive assistants retained by the team.

But is it really the fault of Solari, Matsko, Joiner, and Saxon that the talent level on offensive has deteriorated over the past several years? And shouldn't the blame for that fall on the shoulders of the guy who is responsible for acquiring talent?

In other cities, it might. In Kansas City, G.M. Carl Peterson will soldier on.

"We have a plan and it's being implemented," Peterson said on Monday. "I have no intention to leave before the job is finished."

Said one league source it response: "Is it a 20-year plan?"

How long until everyone in the NFL recognizes that Herm is not NFL Head Coaching Material?

Pretty funny stuff. Even more hilarious is the fact that Herm seems to be cleaning out everyone who had anything to do with winning on Dick Vermeil's staff.

So let's get this straight. The Chiefs used to win with this staff, but after Herm arrived and they start losing, it's obviously these people at fault. Uh... okay Herm.

We all knew it was only a matter of time before this guy completely dismantled a perfectly good team.

This is such a double standard. Whenever a team has a terrible year, and the HC is retained, the assistants are fired. But when Herm does it, it's throwing guys under the bus...

If we replace Sutton with Ryan, does that mean Mangini threw Sutton under the bus? No... It means we recognized an area of weakness and decided we needed to improve it....

I am not saying Herm is a terrific coach, but if you don't want to completely start over with a new system, then it is logical that the changes are made in the coaching area.

Mike Solari, in particular, has been a good OL coach. The guy didn't have any talent. I think he is a much better coach than Tony Wise.

because it is a pattern with Herm. just because too scenarios are similar does not mean they are identical, and you have to dishonestly simplify the two scenarios to their most basic aspects to even dare to try and claim they are the same.

The first casualties of the Chiefs� 4-12 season came Tuesday, when four assistant coaches, including offensive coordinator Mike Solari, were fired.

The others fired were John Matsko (offensive line), Charlie Joiner (wide receivers) and James Saxon (running backs). Solari, Joiner and Saxon were remnants from the staff of former coach Dick Vermeil. Vermeil�s quarterback coach, Terry Shea, was fired last year.

Dick Curl (quarterbacks) and Jon Embree (tight ends) were the only main offensive assistant coaches retained. Each joined the Chiefs two years ago when Herm Edwards was hired as head coach.

�Herm did what he had to do,� Solari said. �We just didn�t get it done offensively. It just didn�t work out.�

Edwards wasn�t available to comment, so it wasn�t immediately clear which way he would proceed with the offense. But Paul Hackett could become a candidate to be the coordinator.

Hackett served as Chiefs� offensive coordinator from 1993-97, when he left to become head coach at Southern California. The Chiefs made the playoffs in all but one of Hackett�s five seasons, but they scored only 47 points in his final four postseason games, all losses.

Since leaving the Chiefs, Hackett also served four seasons as Edwards� offensive coordinator for the New York Jets. He has been quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the past three seasons.

The Chiefs scored only 226 points this season, the worst for a 16-game schedule in their history. They scored more than 20 points only once in their nine-game, season-ending losing streak, and that happened back on Nov. 4 against Green Bay.

Solari joined the Chiefs as their offensive line coach in 1997 and served in that capacity under three different head coaches. He gained a reputation as one of the best line coaches in the NFL and was promoted to coordinator when Edwards joined the Chiefs in 2006.

But the Chiefs, who had one of the NFL�s highest-scoring offensive teams for several seasons while Al Saunders was their coordinator, couldn�t continue the pace with Solari calling the plays. Scoring and yardage dropped dramatically in Solari�s first year and even more precipitously this season.

Solari had never been an NFL offensive coordinator until Edwards took a chance on him. Solari indicated he would return to coach the line for another team next season.

�If the opportunity arises to be a coordinator again someday, I might look at it,� he said. �But for the time being, I�m going to be an offensive line coach.�

Joiner, a Hall of Fame wide receiver, and Saxon, who once played for the Chiefs, joined the Chiefs in 2001 as Vermeil was becoming their head coach. Matsko, a veteran line coach, joined the Chiefs when Edwards arrived.

He presided over the decline of what was once one of the league�s best offensive lines. But this season, the Chiefs allowed 55 sacks, second in team history, and rushed for just 1,248 yards, lowest in team history other than the strike-shortened 1982 season.

What are you going to say when Mangini AGAIN makes staff changes? This is normal stuff, coaches fire and hire guys every year. I will never get why Herm is held to a standard higher than every other coach.

He was competent enough to have alot of success here and he never had a season like we had this past year- I'm talking about awful and healthy. We were awful in '05 but that was all b/c of injuries.
