It was just announced that Marty will be the head coach for the San Diego Chargers next season, however, Marty rejected an extension he was offered. I will find a link now. Just wanted to get it out there as soon as i could.

Good for him. I didn't think he deserved to be fired after this season anyway.

I feel bad for Charger fans. They are probably going to lose Cameron but get to keep Marty.

Rivers a full season under his belt, not many free agents...
They HAVE to explore and or acquire a free agent wide receiver...The best option may be Donte Stallworth. He wants to stay in Philly and his injury prone, but he sure as hell would give them an extra boost because their WR corps are dreadful, minus the potential of Vincent Jackson. Marty will make the playoffs again... |

Unfortunately, this one of the weakest FA WR classes in some time. However, the draft is deep, but generally rookie WR don't do all that much (although there have been a few in recent history such as Boldin, Clayton and Colston). Perhaps they are looking to trade Turner for a WR with upside and a draft pick? (any chance a third and McCareins gets it done...just kidding) |

Anyone have any theories why he refused the extension? He is clearly not from the Tom Coughlin school of coaching in lots of ways.
Edit: ESPN just reported that the reason Marty didn't go for the extension because there was a $1 million buyout at the end of the upcoming season.

That still doesn't make any sense though. If he accepted it and they fire him then he would get $1 million. Now if they choose to let him go, he doesn't get anything. Plus, this makes him a lame duck coach. It makes no sense to me.

San Diego is in a good position, its almost a definite that someone like Meachem or Rice will fall to them.
If they pass on either of those guys, something s wrong.

I guess it's the whole "respect" thing. The only explanation I can think of is that he wasn't at all sure he wanted to stay if things went well next year, but I don't know why that would be.

I guess he figures if he doesn't win in the playoffs next season, he'd be fired anyway. He's just gonna go for broke here and try to go out with a Super Bowl title. If that happens, maybe he'd just simply retire.

Actually, it's probably pretty simple - it's just another poor Marty Schottenheimer decision during the postseason!

I think it is pretty clear that Marty has had it with AJ Smith. Allegedly, the have a terrible relationship and I am sure that letting him hang in wind for a few days after a 14-2 season really pissed Marty off. So, I would guess that next year is Marty's last in SD.
