And on top of this there's an increasing chance by the day that the Mets could face Oswalt-Clemens-Pettite in a 5 game series.

It might be a blessing in disguise for the Mets. It'll probably at least save them one bad loss in the first round.

Well, the only surprise is that it was the other calf. This certainly provides ammunition for the people who said the Mets shouldn't have signed him for 4 years (I'm not one of them - it only cost the Mets money, and gave them the legitimacy to get people like Beltran and then Delgado).

Presumably it will be Trachsel and Maine as the numbers 3 and 4 pitchers. The Mets getting to the World Series has gone from a supposed lock to a question to a real challenge.

My thoughts exactly. But Trachsel could be healthy and still give up as many runs as an injured Pedro.

I don't think that it was a mistake for the Mets to sign Pedro, they obviously knew what they were getting into by giving him a longterm deal (he hadn't been 100% healthy for years in Boston.) The problem was that they didn't add more reliable starters around him in the rotation, because they should've seen something like this coming.

El Duque is one of the all-time great postseason pitchers so I wouldn't worry about him (you can't expect a circa 1999 performance from him, but he won't implode.) Trachsel is a question mark and Maine is a question mark, but both are capable of a big start. Glavine is a pretty safe bet for quality starts.

This doesn't signal the end of the Mets season by a longshot, but their rotation is certainly still cause for concern.

Well for the most part we were the best in the NL without him, and we will just have to show people what our record shows all year
