Keller wouldn't be worth a higher end TE contract.
I'm not sold on Cumberland either...too many mistakes and terrible at pass protection.

There are some intriguing TE's in the draft, and some vet FA out there that would be cost effective. It's definitely time to upgrade, and get a more complete TE in here.

Rich Cimini
#Jets expected to meet at combine with agent for TE Dustin Keller (free agent), per source. Franchise tag doesn't appear to be in play.

after reviewing the eagles offense, keller will likely be retained. he excels at those deep seam releases and intermediate over the middle routes. i think that keller will see increased prodcution under this offense. i dont know if they are ready to take a long term deal on him, but maybe give him a one year deal, let him play out the season and try and up his worth since he was just injured in his last contract year and didnt get a chance to make the kind of money he probably thinks he is worth

either way, i think keller would be a good fit next season.

Keller doesn't suck.. if he goes to another team with a good QB and that knows how to use him he will could be awesome.

Keller should be re-signed. There isn't an adequate replacement, and he's going to be in a system that has shown to do well for TE's. Plus he DOES have good rapport with the Jets starting QB.

I agree. It might be tough, but I feel Keller is a good receiver and we need him. I think we'll give him 3-4 mill per year. We absolutely have to bring either him or Cumberland back, and to me, Keller is the obvious choice. People are hard on him because he isn't the best blocker, but he makes up for it by making difficult Sanchez grabs.

Keller is best at catching passes in the seam and has some ability (trying to give him some credit) to go up and get suckchez's errant throws.

Guess what, aside from blocking seam passes are the strength of nearly every avg to slightly above average TE in the league. What makes Keller so special that he thinks he's pro bowl quality.. its the number of receiptions he's made relative to the number of catches overall receptions by the team. I take this as more of an indictment on the offense that Mr. Check down charlie had to dump off to Keller rather than it meaning Keller is a prolific offensive player.

btw.. Keller sucks at crossing patterns, he's below avg there. If you're known as an offensive first TE you better be damn good at crossing patterns and breaking tackles.. he's not good at either.

Let him go..

Offer him 2.5-3M at max.

If he scoffs, he can take the highway on his way out.

The Jets are meeting with kellers agent this week witch is a sign that we may want to resign him

Quote:
The Jets are expected to meet with the agent for tight end Dustin Keller later this week at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, according to a league source.

Keller is one of the team's top unsigned players. If he's not signed or tagged by March 12, he will hit the open market. There has been speculation about the Jets using the franchise tag on Keller -- the tag amount for a tight end is $5.96 million -- but there's no evidence to suggest it will happen. That would be a tight squeeze for the Jets, who have serious salary-cap issues.

The two sides have yet to exchange proposals, the source said, but Keller is someone the Jets should think hard about re-signing. His value to the team increased when Marty Mornhinweg was hired as offensive coordinator. He employs a West Coast system that relies heavily on a pass-catching tight end.

Keller missed eight games last season because of hamstring and ankle injuries, but if you take a closer look at his numbers, he was actually quite effective. He was targeted 36 times and he had 28 receptions, a 78-percent completion rate -- by far the best on the team.

agreed,we need him its bad enough our offense lacks zero depth and real talent. There will be no real replacement this year,i say franchise tag him and hope next year we have more cap room

It comes down to price. If Keller is still a pro bowler and elite TE in his own mind, let him walk. If he understands that he's been inconsistent and somewhat of an underachiever in a bad offense and is willing to take a very reasonable deal... then keep him.

TBH I'm expecting him to go for the money.

Default keller should go

keller was a mistake to begin with.especially as a first round draft picick.the jets should look to draft a t.e. early.the first three rounds have some interesting players.that I think would prove to be great picks.

Now he sat out most the year because of some bum injuries and needing a new contract, and now all you hear is how bad he sucks. If ya simply don't want the Jets to pay him, say that, don't say he sucks because with a functional offense he will be a top TE.
IMHO, I agree with the original poster...Keller sucks, let him walk, cause you are not going to get much for him...last year, he played 8 games, caught 28 passes for 317 yards (very Mulligan-like)...he is not worth any further investment...

He was injured the whole season..

With a real QB Dustin becomes an instant 1000 yard receiver, easily.

I just read an article today, it said Dustin was targeted 36 times this year, caught 28. By far leading the team in percentage of balls caught thrown his way. Cumberland is better though.
