How much credibility has been forfeited this season amid all the drama. How much of the Jets brand has been lost? I'm sure we won't get the numbers on the swag sales but has anyone else noticed a decided lack of folks in the street wearing Jets gear? Or even talking positively about them? When was the last time you heard anything positive about the Jets on TV/Radio/Inet?

That Woody Johnson is keenly aware of this would be my guess. The brand is as important as the product on the field if you're talking purely money in the coffers. All of it comes into play and you have to wonder what the outlook is for 2013. The Mets have a perception problem. That being of a franchise operating on the margins due to bad judgements and mismanagement. Sound familiar? We may not have Bernie Madoff, but we do have Tim Tebow.

What we do know about Woody Johnson is that he's not gonna stand pat for very long if the trending is downwards and accelerating stability be damned. For better or worse, Woody wants/needs a winner in the New York Jets Franchise. He needs to win on the field. He needs to win off the field too. He's in for what? $750Mil on the stadium alone and you don't get to be a billionaire by losing on investments no matter what your birth circumstances are.

Woody has been embarrased to the nth degree this year by the Ryan/Tannenbaum Jets. Thanksgiving night had repercussions far beyond that particular result. It may have been the beginning of the end for the Tannenbaum/Ryan era. That NBC flexed the SD game may have been the final straw no matter what happens on Sunday. Perception is everything in a tightly constested market like the TriState area. If you're perceived as a clown/loser, you'll be treated as such and no one will take you seriously. That's something Ryan is finding out right now.

This team lacks credibility and Woody has to restore it PDQ or he will lose the marketing wars here in the TriState. There's only one way to do that. Bring in credibility and build from that. No way can he stand pat with what he has. Perception and credibility requirements won't let that happen.

Thoughts?
Your analysis is very complete and persuasive. When I tell people the jets are my favorite team, they usually start laughing. 'Nuff said.

If the Giants complete this collapse (which I think they will) they will take all the heat off the Jets.

Figured I'd bump this thread just to see if any opinions have changed.. Now the question a lot of folks are asking is, is the Jets GM job a desirable one? What "established" NFL Architect looks at the Jets situation and says to himself: "Oh yeah, I want that.."?

Here's where the value of the brand comes into play. Especially since Woody made the HC untouchable from the getgo.

Just how attractive is the Jets' GM position relative to all the other franchises looking to build credibility with their fanbase?

If we get rid of Mark Sanchez, I think our credibility goes up by the nth degree. You can't be a credible organization and still put Sanchez under center.

Personally, if I'm a GM, I'm LOVING the opportunity. It essentially puts me off the hook for one year if Rex does badly. If he doesn't, then I don't have to go through the trouble of interviewing/hiring coaches and can concentrate on things such as the draft.

I was kinda thinking the same thing. Those two years left on Rex's contract really means he has one year to turn things around. That buys time for any incoming GM to make peripheral moves while leaving the core intact for that one year left on the contract.

2010 was the best year I have witnessed, when the Jets would talk all their talk and back it up and say "screw you" to anyone who doubted them, that year was my favorite year, when Cromartie and the Defense said "fuck you" to Tom Brady and then shut his ass down, in 2009-2010, we beat the Pats 3 times and embarrassed them up in New England, If we beat New England, we will gain fans, because the Patriots are the most hate franchise in pro football, based on the fact that they are given waaaaaaaaaay to much respect because of that pansy who wears #12 (They deserve some respect because of 3 rings) but I can honestly say every analyst has never said a bad thing about their horrible defense, they just make excuses for them. People like people who are brash and intimidating, like when teams Legitimately got scared to play against the Jets because their Defense just destroyed QB's, and the fact that Tebow and Sanchez are on this roster loses us respect and when we acquired Tebow, people just began to hate us, because it was an obvious media ploy and people don't like how much attention we get, and they all wanted us to fail (which we did) we need to gain respect by cutting ties with all the players who create all the attention (Sanchez, Tebow, and Holmes)

I think Woody took a good step in firing Tanny immediately and cutting all the ties.

He has brought the best success in a long time, so he's not awful but he does concern himself with the splashy moves rather than the right ones. New Gm has to be a tough guy and we'll be alright again.
