This is true, although they try to sell it as a representative democracy or a democratic republic, but even that part isn't fully true because of the electoral college. I agree with every thing you said, except tyranny and democracy are exact opposites. I've heard of the idea of "tyranny of the majority", but that notion is silly, because tyranny is defined by a single ruler having absolute power. You can still have democracy without allowing extreme power abuse, just like it is set up today, except individuals can vote on issues as well. That doesn't mean they'd be judge jury and executioner. Majority should rule in any democracy, and most scenarios that allow for power abuse of the majority are extreme and outdated.
