June 25, 2007 -- A Brooklyn mother and father got the shock of their lives when school officials informed them their brilliant 11-year-old girl was denied admission to an elite public school - solely because she's of Indian descent.

"I feel bad because I would have gotten in if I was white," Nikita Rau lamented over her failed bid to attend the Mark Twain School, IS 239, in Coney Island, a magnet school for gifted students.

It turns out Mark Twain - unlike all but one other city public school - admits students according to racial quotas established in 1974 by a federal judge who ordered the school's desegregation.

Under those quotas - which originally were intended to boost minority enrollment - 60 percent of Mark Twain's student body is set aside for white students, while 40 percent is set aside for minorities.

How can a public school have a race quota? Isn't that against the law?

I don't want to turn this thread into a race war, but I know several people who applied to my college and were denied admission although they were excellent students, then there are a ton of hispanics and blacks in my school that are truly beyon idiots.

I know someone that works in admissions and he is told straight up to deny white people with high GPA's and more credentials and admit minority students that don't meet the school's requirments.

Wait a minute here - What about the supreme court in 2003 upholding racial quotas for the University of Michigan and denying white students with better grades?

IMO there should be no racials quotas at all but if the supreme court backs them for UM then this high school should be able to as well.

from my experience in nyc public schools... asians and indians tend to dominate admissions into magnet schools ( a la stuyvessant, bronx science, bk tech). i think in nyc, this problem is more rooted in the system then affirmative action. There just not enough good public schools for smart kids to go to.

and yes, affirmative action def is a double ended sword... we could debate about it for hours.
