I understand that's how some need to justify that approach but it's still wrong IMO. There is nothing more important than getting Darnold to succeed, which means protecting him and giving him great weapons. The priority has to be that, period. People arguing about "positional value" solely seem to think that a guy taken in the first 5 slots is guaranteed to make it, but that's not true. And in today's NFL, it's harder to find great OL than DL in the draft, especially this year where it's supposed to be deep in pass rushers.

I agree that it would be ideal to trade down and get back that 2nd rounder plus get an OL or skill player, but if Macc can't find someone to trade with and he stays at #3 and takes a DL that player had better be a monster, not another above average player like Leo.

If we go DL at 3, it has to be edge. Leo, Pennel, and McLendon are perfectly good inside, but we have no pass rush. Other options are OT or trading down.

Here's an interesting article that examines draft bias, both NFL-wide, and team-wise, looked at in terms of "O" vs. "D" and positional bias.

    https://nationalfootballpost.com/offense-or-defense-what-do-you-draft/

From this I conclude that there is a general bias TOWARDS defense overall (but not by much), but especially by the Jets, specifically towards DL and CB in the first 3 rounds. Given this bias, it tends to skew "value" assigned to players based upon their position. Looking at this year's draft class, the general consensus seems to be that the "top ten" players include NINE defensive players and only one "O" player, Jonah Williams OT. I believe this is the result of draft evaluators finding it easier to quantify defensive value than offensive value. For example everyone admits that QB is THE most important position, and a lot of that has to do with how complex it is, but it's really hard to figure out if a guy with great numbers can actually translate that to the pros - so many QBs who are great in college flop in the NFL. So in the pre-draft rankings QBs - unless they're exceptional - are usually ranked behind defensive guys, and yet when draft day comes, here comes Joe QB picked in the Top 5 or 10 because a team needs a QB, the most important position. Or, OTOH, a team who needs a QB but unconditionally relies on BPA (the Jets), disregard their need and take the BPA. This resulted in them passing on a generational QB in Mahomes to take Adams whose positional value is much less than a QB.

In short, "draft value" is highly skewed and not really objectively accurate.

BPA is why nearly every 1st rounder from 2010-2015 is no longer on this team. After this team has retardedly slammed BPA down its throat, need is what we should do.

But we're not devoid of defensive talent. Hell that's what the priority has been for over a decade, so if we are devoid of defensive talent, then we're in deeper shit than we think!

And how could a top rated offensive player NOT make your team better? Or how can you guarantee the "D" guy you take first works out? How many first round "D" picks have the Jets blown?

Finally, these positional values are highly subjective and inclined towards a defensive bias - see my post above.

  8. If anything i think the positional values are just undergoing a change & teams have been slow to catch up. Its soon going to be slanted to more offense w the exception of edge defenders & elite level DBs.

Football is about more than plugging roster holes.A Best player available approach theoretically takes decision making or human error out of the selection equation bc your trusting in your evaluation process to bring you in the best players that fit what you do.But youre also banking on equal distribution of positionsl talent on a year to year basis & thats proven to be a challenge in the modern game.

That said teams still have to trust their grades to a certain extent. As of right now lthere is not an offensive player worth a top 3 pick in this draft..not even close.

Jonah Williams is not a sure thing & neither is Greg Little.Williams could end up at Guard or RT.Little willl struggle early w power rushers.

N’keal Harry? I mean hes got #1 WR ability but #3 overall? Maybe if he runs a sub 4.4 & jumps out of Indy but even than its a tough sell.

If these are our guys im all for it..theyre good players..but realistically top 10-15 type prospects. So why not move down a few spots to 8 or so..still reach on them to ensure theyre ours but minimize the risk w the additional picks?

The problem isnt in the fact they went BPA, its because they picked the wrong players. OBVIOUSLY if a team actually drafted teh BPA at every pick then those guys would be on teh team. Your logic is 100% bizzaro world

Yes, maybe no. If they are spread out across different positions, yes. If not, then no they wouldn’t be. You simply wouldn’t be able to pay all the players if you got BPA every single pick of every single draft. This is why need can be imperative.

The real problem is that this team went full retard and drafted DL in the 1st round for 4 out of 5 years. They had two other picks and they went DB. Not once did they go OLB, OL, or skill position.

If they drafted based on need, things could have been different. Instead, BPA, BPA, BPA. Or so they thought. Assume that Mo, Coples, Richardson, and Williams were all home runs, you simply cannot retain that many players at the same position.

However, let’s say one of them was guard, a wide receiver, an OLB, and a DE. You best believe more of them would be on this team and we wouldn’t have so many holes. Honestly, drafting DL in a 3-4 defense, in the 1st round, for 4 out of 5 years is the most despicable thing I ever seen. It entirely revolved around BPA.

It revolved around a GM's overconfidence that he could correctly identify the BPA in each draft.

Agreed, it's not the strategy that failed, it's the talent evaluation that failed. With Macc's BPA 1st rounders, they have all worked out so far. With Tanny, it was good at first when he traded up repeatedly, but then Rex came on board and had a boner for DL, so DT/DE was always "BPA"to him.

Williams and Lee working out is dubious. Williams in particular has had success, but it isn't guaranteed either one of them will get a second contract. Adams is a terrific player, but we'd still have been better off drafting Mahomes. And Darnold hasn't yet proven he's a franchise QB.

Darnold was a need pick, not BPA. Adams and Williams were the obvious "can't resist" picks, true BPA. Darron Lee is a bit different since he was a late first rounder. He has improved quite a bit this year and with the 4-3 switch, Williams and Lee could both have big years, especially if they can lock down an edge rusher, something this defense has needed for a long time.

If Darnold works out, then you can't really say they should have taken Mahomes. At this point we have no idea where their careers will go. Mahomes looks like he's got it, but we'll see if he can sustain that type of production for the longterm. All signs point to yes, but it's still way too early to judge, plus Mahomes would have never had the same success on this team that he had on the Chiefs. Their level of talent on offense even without the QB makes the Jets starters look like practice squad.

Your language is offensive. Repeatedly using variations of the word retarded is uncalled for, juvenile and disturbing. This comes from an adult whose close friends and family have not been touched by what is now more properly known as intellectual disability; I can't imagine how your comments are received by those who have been so touched. Any reasonably intelligent adult should be able to get their point across without using language more often heard at a middle school lunch table.
