It seems like all he wanted to do the first 2 games is dink & dunk to help Sam get a little more accumulated to the speed of the game. He didn't try to throw deep at all. I think it is time to start pushing the ball down field a little.

    Na.

    It's the preseason.

Where all HC's/OC's/DC's keep their play calling vanilla.

wouldn't hurt to air one out once in awhile...especially against the Giants to rub it into them that they missed out on one heck of QB :D

Usually oc’s have an idea of some plays that want to work on in live action regardless of situation. Looked a lot like that the last 2 games to me. Game 3 usually they game plan a bit and treat it like a dress rehearsal so we should see some more creativity in the play calling

We don’t have Andy Reid, he makes a huge difference.

Arm talent is arm talent regardless who is coaching. I’m sure Robbie Anderson wouldn’t have mind having someone who can still get him the ball when he is passed his defender 70 yards down the field.

The playbook isn't open. No coach is going to show their stuff in preseason.

I remember Herm’s preseason game plan used to feature the 5th string running back handoffs up the gut for 35 carries a game.

    Seriously.

Ultimately, the Jets passed on a QB last year because they had their sights set on the 2018 crop. It wasn't necessarily because they liked Jamal Adams that much better than Watson/Mahomes. They executed on their plan, so let's just hope it pays off.

    Ok. And?

I counted 4.5 almost 5 seconds of pass protection before Mahomes stepped up and made the throw.

Darnold hasn't quite had that type of pass protection just yet, or the time needed in order for that type of play to develop; therefore it's a moot point. He was just playing behind two backup offensive linemen...

I'm pretty sure Bates will open up more of a vertical passing attack as time goes on. Especially once we have receiver's such as Quincy Enunwa back healthy and especially Terrell Pryor as another deep threat over the top outside of Robby.

But it's only the preseason, our key WR's have been banged up and the most important thing is for Darnold to get a better feel for the speed of the game and more importantly stay healthy. Mahomes almost took a big shot there and was tackled by two players. During a meaningless preseason scrimmage.

If the opportunity presents itself I'm sure Darnold will strike deep. But I'm really not worried about it. At all. I've seen him throw many of deep balls while with USC so once the opportunity presents itself it'll happen but no need to force it during preseason.

Who knows. Maybe Darnold attacks deep early and often come opening night on Primetime Monday Night Football and Detroit doesn't know what hit them. Maybe coach Bates as an OC is waiting for the right time to unleash fear into an opposing DC.

But how many QB's can make that throw look easy and effortless like Mahomes did?

It's rare, even among the greatest QBs of all time. So I'm not too worried we don't have him.

"Ok. And?" LOL...This is like watching one of Barry Sanders' ridiculous runs and immediately respond about the differences in the Jets' scheme, personnel and coaching. Very few people on the planet can make that throw and Darnold is not one of them. The kid has an insane arm which is in full display in that clip. Why can't we be impressed? It’s OK as a Jets fan to appreciate talent without it being construed as a slight towards our own players. Mahomes can do things that Darnold can not and visa versa. At this juncture it doesn't make one better than the other; only time will tell.
