Jerry Wexler...Muscle Shoals...the move to Atlantic... what a talent http://www.heraldtribune.com/news/2...sarasotas-jerry-wexler-her-legendary-producer
Oh, no. She hasn't been looking very well the last few years. She was great in the tribute to Carole King sometime back. She still had it to the moon and back. RIP.
A re-make - as are many great songs - but this was a Jones Beach favorite on WABC AM on our crap transistor radio. It went great with my sunburn.
She was truly the Queen of Soul, completely redefining what it meant to be a soul singer. Columbia Records certainly mismanaged her to an amazing extent, trying to market her as a jazz singer; the best thing that ever happened to her was going to the absolutely perfect place, Atlantic Records, and in particular producer Jerry Wexler. Wexler definitely knew R&B (in fact, he coined the term "rhythm and blues"), and he turned her into a superstar overnight (and won Executive of the Year in 1967 as a result). We can all say a little prayer for her. RIP.
She had to get off the road due to health reasons. She was a legend but like most Americans, she let her love of food be her ultimate undoing. She had lost a lot of weight but still was carrying a load and I guess the complications from that was too much to bear. God Bless her as she was the voice of a generation of females of all colors looking to find their place in the world. Before there was Patti LaBelle, there was Aretha Franklin..
I didn't know this. I have a collection called Jazz to Soul thats comprised of Columbia stuff. Its some of the best music I own.
