The contract was put together months ago. Agents don't want to negotiate until the last minute. They fear another prospect getting something in their deal that their client doesn't.

Considering the fact that Mayfield, Allen, and Rosen have all signed, there should be nothing to fear now.

No, but the negotiations just started 3 days ago. The Browns improved some of the language in Mayfield's contact. We don't know what that language is, and Sexton is likely trying to get more than Mayfield , language wise. It would make him more attractive to future clients. That's how the game is played.

On NFL.com they said from a source that Darnold told his agents he wants to play, but the agents told him to hang on to handle "business things". 99% of this contract is set, what the hell are they holding out for? Darnold should just fire them and find someone who is more reasonable. I don't doubt that if he truly becomes even a decent QB for us that he will get paid handsomely on his next contract anyway.

Not about to comment on Sam's contract negotiations with a 10 ft. pole, it would not be fair.

For decades I've heard our former players side, so my opinion is slanted more toward them, with all the number of players USC has sent to the NFL, most first rounders (#1 in both) and the fact that John McKay was our HC when I stepped foot onto the USC campus, that's a lot of years and player stories I've heard.

But, I tend to think it takes two to tango.

I voted for both Jets managaement and Darnold/agent. I think blame falls on both sides of the table. It is hard to fathom that he is legitimately holding out when he is supposed to be the Jets face of the franchise and the leader.

The Jets should be doing all they can and Darnold should be doing all he can to get this squared away because I don’t care what anyone says, him missing camp is a really big deal.

As much as I love Sam, this is on him and his agent.

Not that he should kowtow to the Jets FO but he should have signed 15 minutes after Mayfield regardless of offset.

If the total value and guarantees are in the slotted range he should have rushed to the dotted line.

In order to be looked at as the leader of this franchise he needs to bend over backwards to promote that image.

This is the opposite of that.

100% the Jets FO. Darnold's camp wants the offset language totally removed. The only thing this means is if Darnold isn't on the team in 3 years the Jets are on the hook. I mean DANG he better fuckin be. Just get the guy on the field already.

Weirder and weirder. That's why I love (hate) TGG. I'm taking the rest of the night off. Hopefully when I wake up the contract will be signed.

Except the offset language has nothing to do with his hold out.

Without knowing exactly who is refusing to budge and on what issues it is impossible to attach blame. No one would surely blame Mac for insisting that there are some reasonable contract voiding clauses in there, in case Darnold suddenly goes psycho (or should that be Physco), just like no one could blame Sexton for refusing ludicrously petty ones, say throwing more than 5 interceptions in any season gives the Jets the right to void the deal.

My gut feel is that the Jets are insisting on some sort of team ethic code of conduct in all new contracts after recent issues and that Sexton feels he has leverage to win with Darnold over the issue that he won't have with other future clients. Hence the Mexican standoff.

Nah, not Physco. That would Josh Allen. ; )

If it really is over some 'behavioral clause' on voidable guarantees, the Jets are right to be concerned. I can totally see Darnold mowing people down in Times Square hopped up on meth. Career over by Yom Kippur.

Not really sure what happened with the bolded thing but I'm yelling anyway so what the hell.

No, that's what has been widely reported based on a tweet by Cimini.
The issue is signing bonus payment and clauses that void his contract. Not the offset language.

Totally agree. So why in the hell is that POS pushing for it? So he can put another notch on his belt that he
can negotiate the ridiculous. It's a standard clause on all Jets contracts and many other teams. And no, this is not about the clause, like many think, it's about setting unreasonable prescedence. So fuck him. Sam needs to grow a pair and tell the snake to sign the contract or walk.
