If he's healthy he'll be a good backup for our OL. We need some depth.

  4. Great great move.Jets wanted him last draft & patriots picked him a handful of spots before us.This is not training camp fodder whatsoever

is he still down around 260lbs, or is his health and weight coming back to him?

worth taking a shot on him.

This offseason has really been amazing, everything / everybody i want the Jets to go after for, they're actually getting. Garcia was unhealthy last year but he was a rookie last year this is great value. Heres the OLINE pick that we didn't address during the draft, hopefully people can stop bitching . Lets just pray our doctors keep him healthy

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/antonio-garcia?id=2557938

Garcia would have been a four-year starter at the left tackle spot for Troy had he not missed half his redshirt freshman season due to a knee injury. Garcia fell through the cracks in the recruiting process as he was the first athlete at Charles Drew High School, located south of Atlanta in Riverdale, Georgia, to earn first-team all-state recognition. After making six starts on the blind side in 2013, he started 36 of 37 games after that in the key position. Garcia was an honorable mention All-Sun Belt pick in 2015 and a first-team all-conference selection as a senior.

    ANALYSIS

    STRENGTHS
Outstanding athleticism. Very good lateral quickness coming out of stance. Former high school hooper who still has basketball feet. Able to mirror pass rushers before and after engagement. Rarely beaten cleanly around edge by speed. Continues to slide feet and maintain engagement up and around pass arc. Works to keep his blocks centered in his power zone. Easily redirects back inside to chase an inside challenge. Has loose hips and quick feet providing recovery ability. Plays with his length. Fluid in space and can get to challenging angles. Keeps battling to anchor if he gets bumped early. Finds ways to get his man blocked.

    WEAKNESSES
Carries stringy frame with upper body that looks like a defensive end. Lack of lower body strength exacerbated by elevated pad level. Needs to bend hips to dip pad level below defender's. In pass protection, opens outside hip up early rather than staying square in initial stages. Hands take outside path to target and punch can be ill-timed, allowing rusher first strike into his frame. Defaults to lunging at target when he panics. Lacks anticipation against twists. Will have to add more bulk and strength. Grabs and holds to counter bull-rush. Narrow base carries no power as base blocker in run game. Footwork and angles inconsistent on reach blocks.

    DRAFT PROJECTION
    Round 2

    SOURCES TELL US
"He was below 280 (pounds) in the spring and was below 290 at one point in the fall, so I'm not sure how much weight he can actually carry." -- Scout for NFC team

    NFL COMPARISON
    Jared Veldheer

    BOTTOM LINE
Consistently playing below 300 pounds, his lanky frame is the first thing that gets noticed. But his positive attributes show up on tape more than his weaknesses. Mass and functional strength are concerns and he still needs plenty of technical work, but a team could look to draft and stash him based on his starter's traits and ability.

Nice! Good move. Only upside can come from it and we needed a talented offensive lineman. They are going to have to patient with him because he supposedly was on medication that kept his weight down. He's now around 290+ lbs, and I think he could be really good for us.

Report: Jets claim Tony Garcia off waivers

Tony Garcia may no longer have a job with the Patriots, but the offensive tackle is still sticking around the AFC East.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, the New York Jets have claimed Garcia off waivers. Garcia was selected by New England in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Troy, but never saw the field his rookie year. The reason being was because doctors found blood clots in the offensive tackle's lungs and was said to have lost nearly 30 pounds due to the illness.

Earlier this offseason, Garcia had said he received the all clear from doctors to resume football related activities and it looked like he would have a chance to compete for a spot along the Patriots offensive line in wake of Nate Solder's departure to the New York Giants in free agency. He even told Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal that it was the "best I’ve ever felt,” and that “I’m ready to go.”

Alas, that potential will not have a shot to be lived up to in New England, but rather New York.

Garcia entered the NFL with a lot of promise after a strong career at Troy. During his final collegiate season, he didn't allowed a single sack. The Houston native was also looked at as a top-10 tackle in last year's draft and ran a 5.15 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine and put up 24 reps on the bench press.

From Jets perspective, Garcia will compete for a spot along New York's offensive line that gave up the sixth most sacks in the league in 2017.

As for the Patriots, they are still waging on with the question of who will replace Nate Solder at blindside tackle. As evidence to what offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia had to say about him late last week, it looks like 2018 first round pick Isaiah Wynn will be given a fair shake at earning the starting job.

"He's played left tackle in the best conference in America [and] played it pretty good," Scarnecchia told reporters on Friday, via Mike Reiss of ESPN. "We're going to take a look at it and see how it goes.

"We look for three traits -- smart, tough and athletic enough to play the position -- and he's got all three. We'll see if that translates to this level."

Along with Garcia, LaAdrian Waddle and newbie Trent Brown will also get a look.

In Brown, the Patriots get a big and promising tackle who has received praise for the likes of Von Miller, who felt he had the potential to be one of the best lineman in the league. In 2017, Brown was looked at as one of the top offensive lineman in the entire NFL with Pro Football Focus ranking him as the 21st best tackle.

While those are plenty good options for New England, if neither turn out the way they'd like and Garcia does, it'd be even more of a twist of the knife knowing he's performing well for a division rival.

Patriots front office is in an absolute fucking tailspin! It all started with that 100 percent factual ESPN story about bad blood between kraft/Brady and Belichick. The pats Brass then ultimately made the worst decision in NFL history by siding with a 50 year old QB and letting a young stud FRANCHISE QB go for a freaking 2nd! They basically said here is a franchise QB for the equivalent price of Sheldon Richardson! Retard alerts are really going off all around the pats front office right now.

Belichick is no doubt looking for greener pastures and the divide between him and his players gets stronger, and honestly who can blame belly? Ownership doesn't have his back so why should he have the players ? Gronk decided to ride the Brady train too, big mistake you big ogre sized oaf. He will be out of the NFL in 1-2 years just like Tommy.

Pats front office basically chose 2 years of Brady over 15 years of Garropolo/Belly, they lost a franchise QB and the best coach of all time all in one trade, the master manipulator Tom Brady got his way but he fucked the franchise in the process.

They have No WR's a Tight end who would rather be motocrossing and a defense which can be split open and ravaged by even the most average of Quarterbacks.

The AFC east is open for business again Boys, oh and thanks for the 3rd round Guard you dumb fucks

He could end up being on the pup list this year and compete for the LT job in 2019. It is a nice move. The 1st time I can recall being excited about one of our OL in a long time.

I think he ends up a solid backup here. Maybe NE thinks there is a high probability those lung issues recur? I think things are slowly turning south for them (finally) but I don't think they've gone this retarded yet.

Then again Belichick quite literally threw a Super Bowl away by benching Malcolm Butler so I'm done trying to figure out what's happening up there.

As I said in the other thread in the NFL Forum, the Pats clearly think he's not going to recover from his health issues any time soon, or else this would make absolutely zero sense. No down side for the Jets to pick him up, and if he turns out to be a significant contributor for them the Pats will look very bad.

Yeah it's a bit surprising because they really didn't address their LT need in the draft and many fans and pundits felt Garcia would be the answer even despite the blood clot in the lungs. If they waived him, maybe the weight loss was too much for the Pats to overcome. I'd venture we will soon hear how much he actually weighs right now. It's good he officially got cleared though so now we will see if he can get near 300 lbs. One of his supposed weaknesses before he was drafted was the lack of strength so yeah, we will see about his weight.
