That's a concept that's escaping a lot of people. Right now they can't comprehend anybody at the top of the teams boards other than the 7 fucking QB's. Then they all go berserk Lol during the draft.

Drafting for need in the NFL is ridiculous because positions of need change so quickly.

2015 is a perfect example. We had 3 star defensive linemen all 25 or younger and you’d have thought we were set for years, why draft Leonard Williams?

Mo breaks his leg and turns into an apathetic jerk, Sheldon reveals he’s a dumbass 3 times and Snacks gets overpaid in FA. Suddenly 12 months later Leo is the only sure thing we have at the position.

Unless you have six 24 year old pro bowlers at the same position there’s absolutely no reason to avoid drafting another player at it just because you think you’re “set” there.

Look at the Giants. They made Super reaches on Flowers and Apple in the first round because they “needed” an LT and CB and both were disasters. Pick the best player on the board always (unless there’s a QB you like enough to pass him up).

Great discussion right now, and normally I would agree with you guys, but the Jets need a QB more than anything. It appears that there are potential franchise QB's at the top of the draft. The Jets need to draft one. I love Chubb, Fitzpatrick, Barkley and Nelson, would be happy with any of them at #6 most years, but the Jets have to go QB. If they don't and go into camp with McCown, Bridgewater, Hackenberg and Petty, it would be embarrassing. If Darnold, Rosen, Allen, and Mayfield turn out to be franchise QB's with the Jets passing on them, it would be unforgivable.

He's not a transcendent player. Just an idiotic statement to make.

We're not passing up on a FQB for another defensive back. We have a gaping hole at QB that we need to fill. Do you even realize this is a QB driven league? Were you also cheerleading the Calvin Pryor pick?

How far did we get with that Richardson-Wilkerson-Leonard Williams trio? Yea nowhere. You have to realize what ultimately wins in this league

So you would be ok with taking Derwin James at #6 or taking a safety at the top of the 2nd?

What about next year? If there is a top 5-10 safety prospect, would you be ok with drafting a safety in the top 5-10 because he is BPA? Surely our #1 goal in drafting is to pick up insurance for our previous top picks in case they don’t work out.

It’s much more forgivable to draft for need on days 2 and 3... the talent level in the NFL draft is essentially an exponential decay curve, with the players at the top distinguishing themselves much more than players in the middle rounds.

If you pass on your highest rated player in the first round for a player at a “position of need” you’re likely taking a huge dropoff in talent level.

In mid to late rounds, the players are much more bunched together so you don’t take as much of a hit for selection for position.

I’m not a fan of pinholing yourself to a particular spot just because you’re thin there at the moment. It causes you to ignore extremely talented players at other positions and take guys you don’t actually like that much. To answer your question, go ahead and take Derwin if you truly have him as the #1 player by a mile and you don’t like the remaining QBs. It’s very unlikely that Adams, Maye and Derwin all pan out perfectly and never get injured, but even if they do it’s not difficult to incorporate all 3 into a defense via rotations and versatile alignments.

Nobody's arguing against taking a QB. There isn't anyone here that understands the role, and need, of a QB better than anyone else either. That notion is silly and arrogant (not you). But none of that mean's that it will automatically shake out like or that all those guys are FQB's. Making declarations doesn't change that. Hopefully they have a conviction for a guy or two, they get proactive and they score. Nobody wants that more than anybody else.

"All things in moderation". You cant simply draft based on need, but likewise you can't just take BPA, regardless of position. And QB is a whole other animal unto itself, given its importance to a team. Once you've drafted a BPA for a given position, unless you discover he actually sucks, or is badly injured, you need to look to other areas of need and skip over a BPA for that previously filled position, otherwise you become lopsided with a glut in one area and deficiencies in others.

Drafting "pure" BPA doesn't work, if it did the Jets would be winners by now.

So true. Definitely a lot of risk involved no matter what.

Only a 1 year deal, might be because of the past injuries and might be because they still plan another move, I guess we will see.

Claiborne (7), McCown (10), Bridgewater (5-10), Santos (2?). There's going to be significant cap space next year.

Johnson gets about $14.5 mil a year too. Long getting around $6 mil a year I believe.

This is exactly what I wanted. I wanted to either re-sign him to a 1 year deal or let him go. He hasn't earned a long-term deal and it seems as if his other suitors, most notably Tampa Bay, thought so as well. Smart of him to come back here and see if he can stay on the field, and healthy, for 16 games. Then, and only then, will someone give him a multi-year deal. Happy to have him back.

Yes, drafting purely for need is ridiculous. I never advocated that. There has to be balance between BPA and need, however. Some positions are more important than others. Some needs are greater than others. Often times, there will be several players with similar draft grades.

I totally disagree. When you have a glaring hole that you've ignored both in the draft and FA for years and there's a good prospect at that position, assuming that his draft grade is similar to other players at that spot who play positions where you have no need, you take him, or you trade down where he would be a good value and you take him. That's what the better GMs do. They don't leave holes and ignore positions in the draft for years and years, and they don't keep drafting players who play the same position when the first guy they drafted at that position is a quality starter.

The examples you cited would be disastrous for the Jets and they'd never win anything continuing to ignore the QB position for the sake of having 3 top quality safeties. No NFL GM does that crap except Mac.

The only thing Milliner and Minkah Fitzpatrick share is an alma mater. As a football player Fitzpatrick is at an entirely new level. In fact he didn't even play the same position most of the time. Fitzpatrick is going to be a star in the NFL for a long time

I did mention that QB is an exception to this rule. If you have a QB rated anywhere near your top player, and you need one, you have to take him.

But I think in general (meaning every position besides QB), free agency is for plugging holes and the draft is for accumulating talent. Think about it: if you have a glaring need at a position, you’re going to solve that by putting a 21 year old who’s never played in the NFL at that spot? If you want to fill a need it has to be with a veteran player who you know can do the job. You really aren’t solidifying a position by just throwing a rookie there.

Yes, ideally, you plug holes in FA, but when you fail to sign a player in FA to address that need or there is no quality player in FA that plays that position, what are you supposed to do, just ignore the hole or just sign some JAG who plays that position in FA and think the problem solved? Teams draft and start rookies every season. Mo started as a rookie. So did Richardson. So did Snacks. So did Adams and Maye and others. They have one DE on the roster aside from Williams, Claude Pelon. They could still sign one before the draft, but who? They only have one NT on the roster, McClendon. They have no depth at ILB. Mac better not be done in FA.
