Longtime middle linebacker David Harris, a defensive pillar for the New York Jets who signed with the rival New England Patriots last offseason, is calling it a career, Rich Cimini of ESPN New York reports. "After 11 years of having played the greatest team sport at its highest level, it's now time for me to announce my retirement from the NFL," Harris said in a statement on his agency's Twitter account. Harris, 34, unceremoniously released by the Jets last June, signed a two-year, $5 million contract with the Patriots, hoping to win a Super Bowl ring. That didn't happen, and Harris played a smaller-than-expected role. He appeared in only 10 games (177 defensive snaps) and was inactive during the team's run to Super Bowl LII. Harris was due to count $2.75 million against the Patriots' cap, but his retirement will save them $2.1 million.
I'll always remember that INT against Brady in the divisional game that ended a scoring threat for the Pats. While we didn't score on our next possession, it might've set the tone for a D that sacked Brady 5 times and did a great job covering NE's receivers. Thanks for the memories and professionalism you displayed while you played for the Jets, David.
He will be INACTIVE for the rest of time I guess. Just like this season. He joined I forgive, but I don't forget. Too bad. I loved The Hit Man!
completely different situation. revis was a dick when he was here holding out every year. harris was a class act and great player for us for a decade then we cut him to save money. I don't blame him for signing with NE in his final year in hopes of a ring
Harris probably played three to four years longer than he should have simply because he was such a smart player. Having him was like having another defensive coordinator on the field. Its sad seeing Harris, Revis, Mangold, and Brick ride off into the sunset.
Great Jet, absolutely Ring of Honor worthy... but the hysteria surrounding his release and subsequent signing with the Pats was one of the dumber days this website has seen.
Great player who I'll always remember for picking off Brady in the playoffs and almost bringing it back for a TD. Great professional and also even better person.
I need a few years to forget him turning his coat to everything a Jets player or fan should despise. Someday I’ll forgive him..today is not the day
