Sanchez was never the same after the Steelers ripped his head off and shit down his neck in that game without retribution All of those vicious plays should have been penalties by the way
Sanchez regressed, we drafted, with a few rare exceptions, like our objective was to select the worst player available instead of the best, and the league caught on to Rex's defensive schemes, yet Rex kept talking Super Bowl and believing his own BS.
Idzik set this team back 5 years at least...Not only because of his lack of personnel evaluation skills, but more because that lack of background prevented him from hiring the right people with those skills...keeping the status quo in the Jets personnel department. I always thought Tanny relented to whatever Rex wanted in the draft and as much as Rex was hit and miss with that, he did hit a few times...And at the very least was a football guy. Idzik came in and silenced Rex leaving no good/valuable football personnel input for drafts. Again Rex wasn't great, but at least he had some knowledge...Idzik had none, the people he listened to weren't good, and Rex was put in time out...Result, years of no talent coming in. Idzik had a chance to restock the system with his 12 pick draft, trading up or down and building a war chest of picks for coming years by using that stash of picks and he froze...and of course he did as he didn't have an idea of what value his picks had so he went the safe (i.e. scared) way and did nothing. Successful front offices have people who other teams want, Mac's folks are sought after...how many of Idzik's guys left the Jets for other team's positions?
Idzic silenced Rex? His 3 first round picks were d line corner and in the box safety. That sounds like Rex filled out the cards personally to me
Maybe not 7, but a number of us have been sending a warning signal at that time. The fact of the matter is: 1. Jets during Rex Ryan era was [built to win]. That is when Rex just got on. They did pretty well. 2. Br4d nailed the player acquisition part, so i will not mention that mess. [Read his posting instead.] 3. Instead, let me point out something else: salary cap. I've been harping over this issue for a while; the salary cap structure by Tannenbaum does not sustain success. He always hands out massive contracts to a handful - about 5 to 7 - and then fills the rest of the roster with players getting peanuts for salary. That would be either rookies or journey men. During the Sanchez era, that was Sanchez/Revis/Mangold/Ferguson, with a handful [Edwards/Holmes et al] coming in a shade below. Naturally, the talent drop from the starting players to the reserves/rookies was very steep. So, once the wheels fell off, the team didn't have enough young players good enough to elevate the team. Add to the fact that, Tannenbaum handed out the draft picks to acquire seasoned vets. This works two-folds; 1. It robs the team of its youth and 2. once the aged vet gets too old to contribute, the team is left high and dry.
Wow, just wow ... http://www.footballdb.com/teams/nfl/new-york-jets/draft/1986 http://www.footballdb.com/teams/nfl/new-york-jets/draft/1995 I can't bear to go back and look at the others.
Lotsa reasons but I'll boil it down to four major reasons why really 2 if you want to look at it that way. They missed on Buttfumble, Geno, Hackenberg. They missed on the QB. They missed on Gholston another epic bust quite possibly the worst draft pick ever. The Jets drafting has been abominable.
When you have a bounty of picks in a very talent laden draft..... then proceed to blow almost all of them, your team goes into the shitter, as the competition improves theirs by aquiring more young talent that you passed on
What went wrong was Wayne Fucking Hunter nearly got Sanchez decapitated and disembowled on the very next play from scrimmage the following year.
What went wrong? We went back to Drafting absolutely horribly & ignoring the offensive skill positions bc the braintrust has an unspoken affinity for 1970s era pigskin that thinks Defense & OL is the only thing that matters. This Of course is a defense mechanism for the the fact that the scouting Dept wouldn’t know a dynamic skill talent if it smacked them right in the face
Nobody will ever talk about how the steelers got away with everything that game, the steelers silver spoon was polished by the refs all game long. Jets win that game with fair officiating and they also win the super bowl over a packers team who only beat the jets that year 9-0 due to once again brutal officiating
Bad drafting, and stripping a young QB of the supporting cast around him = young QB never developing. Then paired with a coach who talked a big game but couldn't back it up with a failing roster = recipe for disaster. A once feared team with a ton of fight turned into a team that was all talk and no action. Then we made the mistake of retaining Rex but firing Tannenbaum. Which then led to no one wanting the GM job because they did not want to be saddled with a failing HC. In comes Idzik who was not qualified for the job and aside from being on the seahawks, had nothing of merit and ultimately he set us back 3-4 years because his drafting was horrendous as well. In comes Macc and Bowles, who so far, are on middling ground. They came in, bought a bunch of starters and came within a game of the playoffs. Then shit hit the fan because somehow Macc thought Fitz would somehow figure it out in his 30's and become a legitimate starter (clue to Maccagnan and Bowles now - McCown will be serviceable but will not bring us to the playoffs). Maccagnan also had a bad draft in 2015, but has improved a bit since. But much remains to be seen in terms of whether Maccagnan can cure the Jets QB illness and whether Bowles can figure out when to use a time out, or how bad it looks to everyone who cares about the team that quiting and punting the ball on 4th down. The constant in all of this? The Jets do not have a game breaking QB, no GM, aside from Tannenbaum when Eric Mangini was likely influencing player personnel, has drafted well, and the coaching, aside from Rex pumping some life into this team and bringing a top 5 defense, has been great.
Hey! Mark Sanchez is better at throwing at the back foot of a receiver crossing the middle of the field than any QB I've ever seen, BAR NONE. If that were a good thing, he could have been a hall of famer....
Speaking of draft choices.. Can anyone get Darron Lee to go watch Miles Jack play football? I understand Lee is a fucking little twerp next to Jack, but can we agree Jets fans should have seen at least one flashy pass break up by now? What Mac and toilet bragged about having in Lee is actually what Jax has in Miles Jack. He's versatile as all out hell and can pass cover better than most corners. Meanwhile, Mac got us this little shithead that's been a brutal disappointment.
As others have pointed out out, the rosters that went to 2 straight AFC Championship games weren't built for sustained success. Tanny trading away draft picks caught up with the team. Then came Idzik who never should've become the GM in the first place and blew the 2014 draft where he had 12 picks. The jury is still out on Mac.
The 2014 draft represents everything to me that went bad with the Jets after 2010. Compared to that Macc has been Bobby Beathard.
