If the Jets do draft a QB in the first round they are going to need to surround him with better talent than what is currently on roster. It remains to be seen what holes will need to be filled and priority. I'd venture to say they will need to add at least a couple of lineman in free agency which is very expensive.
I was reading we are going to have a ridiculous amount of cap space next season. My question is what are we going to do with it? Wilk is obviously getting cut, and we really don't have any young players who deserve an extension. I'd resign Claiborne to a long term deal if he stays healthy, but then what? Sign Brees?
What about Enunwa ,Ealy , Kerley , Damario Davis , ASJ, Dozier ,Qvale , and a dozen others ? I think we have 28 FAs 29 if we count McCown. The majority are practice squad / fringe players but some of those will be kept around also. Maybe we look at bringing in a corner like Trumaine Johnson or Xavier Rhodes , someone like Ziggy Ansah at DE. WR could be another position we upgrade , Depending on where we're drafting , Cousins could be an option and (I know it's hard to believe but ) we can carry alot of it over.
It all starts with who will be making those decisions. Will Woody be back from England after Trump is impeached? Will Macc and Bowles be retained (YUCK). How attractive will the Jets look to free agents. Many more questions for sure. Top of my list is Bowles has to be gone. A defensive coach who can't stop anyone and cannot relate and deal with veterans should not stay around. I would interview Morton for sure if his offense continues to do good. Macc I don't know yet. His free agent pick ups look better this year but his scouting skills are horrible. Hack, Lee, Smith not good at all.
$64,855,527 according to Over The Cap. But as has been pointed out, no Claiborne, Enunwa, Kerley, Davis, etc. So many holes to fill and positions that need upgrading.
Jethro. Stop. Let Mac worry about it. If he wants your expert opinion, he will personally contact you.
Wilkerson, Skrine, Forte will all likely be cut, and if that does happen it frees up almost 20 million in extra cap if im not mistaken. We are going to have a ton of cap
This is premature since there are still 10 games, but I'll be curious how/if WR is addressed. At the start of the season, I figured another big addition was necessary, but Kerley and Kearse have actually been quite solid this year and I'd want them back. Anderson is showing signs of improvements and looks like a keeper, but as a starter? Then there's how will Enunwa return from a serious injury? Stewart looks like a player, but we've seen so little of him. And then there's Chad Hansen, still an unknown. Crazy to say, but is this team possibly set at WR??? Nice mix of youth and vets Looking at a top flight lineman in free agency, maybe a center?
Holy crap! I just looked it up on overthecap.com, and following is a list of the Jets FAs for next season. Josh McCown QB Jets UFA $6,000,000 $6,000,000 Morris Claiborne CB Jets UFA $5,000,000 $2,000,000 Wesley Johnson C Jets UFA $2,746,000 $0 Austin Seferian-Jenkins TE Jets UFA $1,313,733 $3,220,629 Demario Davis ILB Jets UFA $1,000,000 $100,000 Mike Pennel 34DT Jets UFA $1,000,000 $0 Chandler Catanzaro K Jets UFA $900,000 $250,000 Kony Ealy 34DE Jets UFA $886,708 $1,249,512 Jonotthan Harrison C Jets UFA $850,000 $50,000 Bruce Carter ILB Jets UFA $800,000 $0 David Bass 34OLB Jets UFA $775,000 $0 Julian Stanford ILB Jets UFA $775,000 $0 Jeremy Kerley WR Jets UFA $775,000 $0 Travaris Cadet RB Jets UFA $775,000 $0 Terrence Brooks S Jets UFA $717,844 $606,376 Chris Gragg TE Jets UFA $690,000 $0 Ed Stinson 34DE Jets UFA $690,000 $0 Dakota Dozier LG Jets UFA $630,146 $300,584 Anthony Johnson 34DE Jets UFA $570,000 $0 Lawrence Thomas 34De Jets ERFA $540,000 $0 Freddie Bishop 34OLB Jets RFA $540,000 $0 Brent Qvale RT Jets UFA $525,000 $0 Rontez Miles S Jets UFA $525,000 $0 Quincy Enunwa WR Jets UFA $498,750 $0 Doug Middleton S Jets ERFA $495,000 $0 Eric Tomlinson TE Jets RFA $495,000 $0 Chris King WR Jets ERFA $495,000 $0 Xavier Coleman CB Jets ERFA $465,000 $0 I bolded the players I think the Jets will definitely look to bring back, and Qvale, Coleman, Pennel, and perhaps another player or two could be added to that list as well. Thus, I don't think we're going to go on the FA bonanza that some of us initially thought. Since top pass rushers are rarely FAs, and taking a look at the list of potential FAs doesn't show any answers http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/outside-linebacker/, I don't expect the Jets to sign a FA OLB. Four of the Jets FAs on the above list play the DE position or are listed as a DE on this list of potential FA DEs: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/defensive-end/. The Jets could possibly axe Mo and make a run a DeMarcus Lawrence of the Cowboys, but he's the only one there I could see the Jets having any interest in. Another position they could look to address in FA is CB. I see a number of young, cheaper players 27 and younger on the list, but don't know how good any of them are. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/cornerback/ RB is another position the Jets could look to address in FA, and there are quite a few players 27 and younger that the Jets could consider, but when even mid-round RBs can usually come in, contribute early and play at a high level (if they can pass block), I'd be surprised if dished out big money for a RB, when they can draft one. There are quite a few 25 and 26 year-old Centers on the perspective FA list, so that could be a place they'd look if they aren't happy with Wesley Johnson or want to upgrade the position. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/center/ One position they could probably definitely upgrade the depth on is OG. Again, there are quite a few younger players on the perspective FA list. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/guard/
