1) The Jets are hiding a McCown injury 2) The plan all along was to start one of the young QBs and they're going to see which one is better and start them even though McCown is better since it's a rebuilding year 3) Bowles has no idea what he's doing All 3 equally likely IMO
Trying to give Bowles the benefit of the doubt, there could be a 4th reason. They announced that they were going to announce their starter on Monday. I'm sure that Bowles has received criticism for not giving Petty more reps, and so could be responding to that somewhat, but if he's really trying to make it an even/fair competition, the only way he could do that is for him to give Petty a lot more reps in the last 4 TC practices.
Mccown seen running sprints during practice, I think that rules out 1. 2&3 still very real possibilities
The fact that they wouldn't let him talk to the press after Saturday certainly lends to the injury theory. It makes very little sense to limit his Reps despite the fact his level of play is already known. He still is here presumably to help implement the new offense to a young group. The week leading up to preseason game 3 is crucial to that rollout.Hes either hurt, about to be cut/retiring or "Option 3" re:Bowles incompetence. I'm leaning toward injured bc it'd make sense why the jets & Mccown have been so hush hush
Per Bowles, he wants to give Hack and Petty more reps now because McCown got more reps earlier. And McCown was sprinting because he likes to stay fit. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...ccown-received-handful-reps-article-1.3433577 So unless Bowles is lying, that rules out Options 1 and 2. Option 3 is expected at this point.
Someone said they think Bowles is winging it. No reason to think that is wrong. Qb competition should be equal reps to begin and then take them away from whoever is trailing. Culminating in a clear leader by this point. this is brutal
Maybe it's going to be announced on Monday to see how Hack and Petty play on Saturday. I think it may be more how Petty plays as he did pretty good, yes against backups but he was playing with his own backups. Maybe Bowles is realizing they should have given Petty more of a shot.
I'm with Bowles here. McCown is going to get the job, and get all the reps with the starts moving forward after this week. Petty & Hackenberg are still competing for the backup position.
My theory is that we are concerned about McCown's escalated contract terms relating to play-off appearances. We need to bench him so we don't break the cap when we bring home the VLT.
Just like this entire episode, the real competition was for backup. You don't pay $6mil for a backup.
If they cut Mcclown before week 1 his salary isn't guaranteed for the whole season. Would they try something wacky like naming Petty the starter just for the opener in Buffalo. Cut Mcclown on cut down day and then sign him back week 2 for the savings? It would be crazy but it seems odd that he is not getting any reps and they aren't talking...
