Recently released by the Cowboys because he was facing charges for a crime he did not commit, Whitehead landed with the Jets and had a chance to rebound with an organization in desperate need of help at wide receiver. Now, Whitehead has a broken foot, coach Todd Bowles announced Tuesday, the day after he sustained it. Bowles didn’t know if surgery would be required — that remains to be determined — but the Jets said Whitehead will be out “an extended period of time.” Whitehead was cut July 24 by the Cowboys after they learned charges had been filed against him for shoplifting and then for failing to appear in court. Whitehead said he wasn’t even in Virginia at the time of the crime, but the Cowboys did not believe him. He wasn’t lying, and it was an impostor who committed the larceny. Whitehead joined the Jets two days later when they claimed him on waivers from the Cowboys. **** Looks like Frankie Hammond may have a roster spot and the return man job sewed up.
damn that sucks for Lucky and for the Jets.. I was really hoping for a dynamic return man, especially on punts. Worth giving Devin Hester a call? Or giving McCluster another look?
Hmmm...Frankie Hammond ...wasnt he the guy who the Beatles replaced as the top pop star in England in the 1960????? Pretty popular that Frankie H !!
I said we need a few more WR's. However there is not much out there and the teams will go straight to 53. No one has to be cut or released until the final cut day. New this year and I don't like it. Clubs stash players and hope to get the best (after 53) on the practice squad.
Whitehead may have caught a break (no pun)... Out 4-6 weeks, so might be available early this season after all.
It may help him, but I'm not sure the Jets should wait on him. His conditioning (aerobic or football-wise) won't be great and he could be limited for another month or so after that. If I were Mac, I think I'd probably go with Hammond or Murphy and put Whitehead on IR.
I guess it depends on 4-6 weeks to return playing, or 4-6 weeks to return practicing? If it's the latter, then I agree it would be PUP or maybe even IR. If it's the former and they like his potential, then I'd be willing to keep him on the 53.
I know that these guys aren't normal and medical science has made a lot of progress in rehabbing injuries, but it has always been 6 weeks for a broken bone, and that's if it did't require surgery. Even if that has shortened to 4-5 weeks, I would think that it would be 2 months before he was in any kind of shape to contribute. In one article I read the writer said that Hammond offers more on offense than Whitehead does. I have no idea if that's true, but if it is, I would think that they would either just move on from Whitehead or stash him on IR. I know they can designate one player on IR to be eligible for return (no pun intended), but I wouldn't think they'd want to use that this early or on a returner.
Almost broke the radio in my truck with Joe Benigno saying I guess Lucky's not so Lucky huh? Then laughing at himself and saying it 12 times....
