This franchise if forever shrouded with misery and agony, when's the season start? Can't wait!! (Insanity)
I still see the several big plays that turned it around vividly. Vinnie going down next game was a square kick to the balls. '82 is worse for me tho still.
Personally, I find that this is still the most painful loss in all my years of being a NY sports fan (Jets, Knicks, Yankees). I will always maintain that this is the most devastating loss in the history of our franchise. This was worse than the divisional round playoff loss in Cleveland or the AFC Championship game loss to Pitt in January of 2011, or any other game you want to give me. The main reason being, of course, that this was, for all intents and purposes, the Superbowl. The winner of this game was always going to curb-stomp Atlanta, as Denver proceeded to do two weeks later.
Losing to the Steelers in the divisional round in the 2004 season was by far the most painful. I was 16 and stuck watching the game with my entire extended family...who are all Steelers fans. It got brutal. Fuck Doug Brien.
The '98 Jets was the best Jets team I have ever seen, but the '98 Broncos were one of the best NFL teams I have ever seen. That team had John Elway, Shannon Sharpe, Terrell Davis, Ed McCaffrey, Rod Smith, Bill Romanowski, etc... Asking that Jets team to go out to a Denver (difficult place to play) and beat that team was a lot to ask.
Doug Brien game was far worse. The day after was the most hopeless & bleak this fan base has ever been.Outside of 09-11 it hasn't really ever gotten better.
Since we are on the topic. This game wasn't the worse loss in franchise history, but it was gut wrenching. I was about 20 years old and that was the first game I ever felt like crying afterwards. (No, I didn't end up crying)
Nah, still the Browns as far as I am concerned. I get your reasoning but I don't believe we've ever thrown away a game quite so badly as Cleveland. At least with this game, we weren't expected to win - to me this is only painful because Atlanta was waiting. These threads always derail to a "worst loss ever" discussion.
My proudest moment for all of my years of fandom was that dude who held up two banks in a Sanchez jersey. Go Jets!
There's so many awful games, I lose count. Thanks for ruining Christmas Eve, Jermaine Lewis. There aren't enough Rolaids in the world. AGITA.
Definitely a fair perspective. I always look at the overall impact of the game in question, but I know where you are coming from.
This loss would be way up there for me, as well. 2000 is another one of those "lost" seasons in our history. We were 6-1 and 9-4 before totally shitting the bed. That loss to Detroit the week before was just . . . so Jets. To be honest, I don't look at the Christmas Eve disaster as the "Jermaine Lewis" game. Instead, I tend to look at is as the "Vinny Testaverde game."
Yeah, but that's the thing, we were dominating them in the 1st half. Their offense was doing nothing and we were moving the ball up and down the field. But, as per usual when it comes to the Jets and big games, TURNOVERS. We should have been up by much more than 10-0 when Denver finally woke up in the 3rd quarter. Also, I definitely agree about the 98 Jets, that was truly a magical team.
