Botulism, see how I laugh. I can't believe this kid was in a coma since shortly after his imprisonment. Severe brain tissue death, probably from oxygen deprivation, which could have happened any number of ways. This is a fckn disgrace.

Yeah, not smart, but I should've been far more forceful in my OP. In no way does it justify or excuse what happened to him. I'm really angry over this.

Disrespected a foreign government IN that country and that country isn't even remotely friendly with us? A government that is as fascist as it gets.

    I'm not shocked he's dead.

Which brings me to my next point. Don't hang out in countries that hate the shit out of us and be surprised if you get detained cause they hate America.

I worked with a guy who'd visited North Korea four times and never had a problem.

    Ouch.

I'm a little confused why anyone would go to North Korea for a study abroad program.

He wasn't there for a study abroad program. He was there just for a five day tour from a China-based tour group. He also didn't do what they said he did (steal a sign) That's some North Korean bullshit

Trying to get out Pyongyang, the real worse day at the airport ever. I'm not even sure that he had the damn thing on him when he got detained (poster).

Knowing NoKor like everyone does, I still don't get why any American in their right mind would want to go there. What is the point of going to a state that is a pariah in the modern world? Why are there "tours" as if people are going to some game preserve to look at the animals. If there are any Americans still in NoKor, they should know they are on their own and if they get into some shit, they'll have no one to blame but themselves for being there in the first place.

Well the tour company that set it up has decided to stop taking Americans on their trips, because that was certainly the reason Warmbier died, it was because he was American.

I blame the Americans for taking the tour more than the company now offering them. Like cman said, why go there when you know there is a chance this can happen

Absolutely, I blame anyone that goes there for what happens to themselves, I just thought the company's move to no longer take Americans was a ridiculous move intended to somehow act as if they are making a positive change.

And now an adjunct professor of anthropology at the University of Delaware has declare Warmbier got what he deserved while saying he is "typical of a mindset of a lot of the young, white, rich, clueless males who come into my classes." Kathy Dettwyler has declined to comment on her Facebook posts and comments to a National Review article regarding Warmbier.

I have no problem with the young and clueless comments - that comes with the territory but for Dettwyler to infer that the not wealthy, the non-white and the female members of the species would somehow be immune from such behavior is blatantly racist, sexist and classist. Will Delaware accept that as free speech?
