• Al Toon, WR, #88. • 6'4, 205lbs. • Born in Newport News, VA (4/30/1963). • Went to College @ Wisconsin. • Drafted by NYJ 10th overall (85' draft). Being born in 1985 and Al Toon being drafted in 85' (due to his short career) #88 was a little before my time. But as a football junkie who's always loved learning about the history and culture of these All-Time Jet players, i hope that one day younger generations will also appreciate the great one's from my era. ▪8 years (1985-1992). ▪517 receptions (26 playoff receptions) ▪6,605 receiving yards (330 playoff yards). ▪31 TD receptions (2 postseason TD's). ▪3x Pro-Bowler. ▪1x First team All Pro. ▪4 seasons of top 10 receptions. ▪3 seasons of top 10 receiving yards. He's a beloved Jet player by my older brother. Still has his jersey to this day. As a kid he'd always tell me stories on how Toon was a big WR who took one too many big hits over the middle of the field and a multitude of head injuris ended his career short before the age of 30. #88 is without question an All-Time top N.Y Jet.
Can't be the same player. I understand how the same player can play WR and CB, but also DE or RB? The number list says that he played DE. I'm sure that in the lower numbers I'll find another Bobby Humphrey that played CB, but don't have time to look now. Wikipedia said that he was a CB from 1984-89 and went to N. Mexico St. I also found an article from 1985 where the Jets activated WRs Wesley Walker and Bobby Humphrey. I remember both the one who played DE and vaguely the one who played DB. Something is rotten in Denmark. LOL EDIT: I found Bobby Humphrey the WR-CB-KR. He wore #48, but the site has his years wrong. They have him playing from 86-89. Wikipedia has him playing from 1984-89, but I found an article from July 1984, and in it it talks about his improvement as a WR from the previous year, so he had to have been with the Jets since '83. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Humphery http://www.nytimes.com/1984/07/25/sports/jets-pleased-with-humphrey.html There is no nfl.com profile for either Bobby Humphrey of the Jets, but there is one for the Bobby Humphrey, RB, who played for the Broncos and Dolphins.
Daryle Lamonica and then Gerry Philbin, haha. My idiot brother used to say, "OK, you be Daryle Lamonica and I'll be Gerry Philbin." "N-o-o-o-o-o-o!" And then he would drill me over the ottoman in the living room. Bastard. Sorry to get out of order, I just had to bring that up. Chris Baker. Robbed by the POS refs vs Cleveland over the push out and then a couple of years later parks his Bentley in the Jets Team President's spot and refused to move it. He was unhappy about his contract, but the funny part was dude, you're driving a freaking Bentley. He really turned into jerk over it, purposely missing treatment with med staff and not showing up for off-season work outs, but I did secretly think the parking thing was mildly amusing, bitchy move that it was. I would've busted a gut if he got towed, haha. He was an OK player, though.
I recall a great Toon play where he was stretched out horizontal about 6 feet in the air grabbing a ball before getting crushed. One of the best receiving plays I've ever seen!
Number 86. Johnny Mitchell. TE. What a disappointing sack of shit. Perhaps the most talented of the long line of TE busts we've had. We may be cursed with the position.
Shuler, baker,Becht,Kyle Brady, The last 2 while not great receivers had long careers, I think we are batting 500 on te's. Keller even had a good year with favre, who liked to throw to the te
yeah, so sad. It was the fantastic catch that got my young ass interested (even more so) in football and in the NY Jets.
