Why does that matter? You think they'd stop selling their crops to us?

I've always assumed republican women had dicks. Their husbands, for example.

Let's say I make t-shirts, and supply 99% of the shirts to Target. Target makes up 80% of my business. If Target stops buying T-Shirts from me, what happens to my business when I lose 80% of my business? The hiccup for the rest of the country will much less as they source new vendors for kiwis than it will be California looking for new customers for theirs.

Point is, the consumer will always be more valuable than the producer. California will still need the rest of the former country to buy those goods or else its economy crumbles because it ain't some powerfully independent economy that can withdraw from the country and maintain itself on its own.

The point is that the rest of the US needs California just as much as California needs the US. I was talking about necessities, as in food, not T-shirts that can be manufactured anywhere. You cant just plant seeds anywhere you want and expect them to grow.

Not only that, California, Oregon and Washington are all gateways to the Pacific Rim nations. Those would be the nations with the highest potential markets on the planet. While the Rednecks in Alabama will depend on the Rednecks in Georgia or Mississippi to buy peanuts and cotton and such, Cali will be just rolling along with trade with China, Indonesia, SoKor, Taiwan, Mexico and so forth.

So, who is the real loser in this scenario?

He's telling Saudi Arabia they've got to pay for those bases RIGHT NOW!!!

Secession? Please. Trump won only due to the electoral college and a bunch of tv-addicted dunces. Where is the 50.01% at the state level going to come from? Certainly not in California, and even Texans aren't that dumb.

If they're smart, they'll get the hell outta 'Bama and head west as fast as they can. If not, they'll have no one to blame but themselves.

If you control the water you can make it very expensive or even completely divert the water. Being SoCal gets about 60% of their water from the Colorado river, and the Colorado River Compact likely would not remain intact if they seceded, that water becomes a big bargaining chip. The soil may not be as fertile further inland but with a large quantity of water available hydroponic farms as well as other farming methods would work.

And let me add, the chance of any state seceding is close to nil. If states were really worried about that states rights they could just start electing people that will pull back power from the Fed., instead they just keep feeding the beast.

Forget the fruit, Silicon Valley is in California. They could hold Trump hostage by taking away his Twitter.

Of course, but the point is the biggest hit will be to California's economy initially, and our economy ain't as healthy as they want you to believe. They have to continuously raise taxes to pay them annually ballooning pensions, would institute socialized healthcare which would require more taxes (they are trying to pass it now) and would do so with the ideology of open borders which would flood the state with even more mouths to support. Oh, and let's not forget having to create a military.

Meanwhile, the educated young are already departing California because it is not affordable. That would leave New Cali with an influx and growing population of poor, the existing wealthy to pay for it all, and whatever middle class that doesn't leave to be taxed into lower class dependence. None of that is a recipe for economic success if your customers in Old US decide not to buy from you, even in the short term. When income stops coming in but you have mouths to feed, who is blinking first.

The middle class in CA is evaporating as taxes go higher and higher, house prices become unaffordable, and the youth abandon the state.

We are already turning it a state of wealthy and poor, and the increased taxes that secession would require will only further drive people out, leaving only the poor and unskilled and the wealthy who couldn't see the writing on the walk that it is time to go. California is already struggling to pay for its pensions, can't afford to incarcerate criminals which has led to early releases, lack of punishment and increased crime. If they don't have the fortitude to police the state and pay for jails, where are they going to find the nerve to create and pay for a military to protect itself? The size of the economy isn't self sustaining and wouldn't continue in isolation, so to simply cite it is an incomplete picture of the current state of California and where it's clearly heading now.

Throw is secession, which would only exacerbate the current problem, and the state would completely devolve into overtaxed wealthy supporting underskilked poor. The increased taxes would drive people out, without a doubt. We can applaud the size of the economy all we want, but the state government doesn't have the capability to run itself as an independent nation. It gets to do what it does now because it resides in the safety of the economic bosom of the entire US.

If Cali secedes, don't think you're taking our naval bases with you.

Currency, as in paper and coinage, is on the way out at this point. It's a generational undertaking but we're working our way through it at the moment. If California (or Texas) seceded in 2040 the odds are pretty good they'd go too a paperless system, with all citizens having a currency card that replaced paper and coins.

What currency they would attempt to emulate is not clear but it would be harder to manipulate than current currencies are.

They might even go with a minimum draw in every citizen's account each month and then use work hours (WHRS) as the additional revenue each citizen earned. There are models for a system like this that project universal wealth in the system as citizens become motivated across the spectrum to work and produce. The advantages of having an hour of work produce a set reward for everybody are that all citizens feel that they're valued in the system and rewarded as such. It's also much harder to manipulate a system like that and things like money lending and interest tend to be replaced by saving and accumulation and full purchases instead of installment plans.

It's a Utopian Ideal but then again this is California and you never know...

President Barnum! You promised you would drain the swamp! You PROMISED!!

Washington Post on the NY Times piece:

The New York Times reports that the White House is trying to block an effort by the Office of Government Efforts to seek the release by federal agencies of waivers granted to former lobbyists to work for them:

"Dozens of former lobbyists and industry lawyers are working in the Trump administration, which has hired them at a much higher rate than the previous administration. Keeping the waivers confidential would make it impossible to know whether any such officials are violating federal ethics rules or have been given a pass to ignore them."
