I'd hate to see no true competition for the Jets Qb job again. You would think this franchise would finally learn their lesson. Maybe if there was true pressure on Geno to earn the job the stupid mistakes that lose games would diminish. With his record why should he be a lock to get the job.
Competition can occur without it being public knowledge, like we're used to seeing in the past. They could name Geno "the guy", and after a few weeks of looking like shit in training camp, suddenly Fitzpatrick is the starter. New CS, new philosophy, new era.
Guys, if a true competition it'll only improve the team. There has to be accountability esp at the Qb position. But we've heard this before.
It can be whatever Bowles wants it to be. The best guy will be on the field come September. Gailey has already had some success with Fitzpatrick and knows what he can do. It doesn't hurt to see what they can get out of Geno.
I'm ok with that. I'm all for Geno doing well. But imo after watching him for two years: his upper limit is game manager.
Agreed, but not sure that you're getting a whole lot more out of Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick is benefiting right now from not being Geno.
Fitz's career has been erratic. It would not be that hard to beat him out. Didn't he play better for Houston last year when he took over after Mallette was injured. Until he got injured. And had better stats on turnovers. But they decided not to keep him and went outside the organization to sign a FA Qb.
Fitzpatrick is mediocre... just barely good enough to stick around and get opportunities, but that's about the extent of it. Geno sucks but in theory still has potential that could possibly be drawn out by different coaches and a different philosophy.

I'd say that the numbers are pretty comparable. A few categories swing each way - but generally about the same. The one major difference to note however: those 1st 27 games are over RF's 1st FIVE seasons as compared to Geno's 30 games being in his 1st TWO seasons. RF's W/L in games started was 8-14-1 Geno's was 11-18 Assuming a similar arc of growth - this would definitely be a reason to be optimistic. RF's numbers in his next year as a starter showed a major jump across the board: Code: Year G Att Comp Pct Att/G Yds Avg Yds/G TD Int Lng 20+ 40+ Sck SckY Rate 2010 13 441 255 57.8 33.9 3,000 6.8 230.8 23 15 65T 39 8 24 145 81.8
That's the thing about geno . . . If he plays like a game manger, we should be in good shape, but he has the arm and the legs to be more than a game manager. He can make the big throw and make something out of a broken play with his legs. Those are things that most game managers can't do because they have physical limitations. The problem isn't that geno can't make a big play, it's that he makes bad mental mistakes (taking a sack in FG range, for example) at the worst possible times. It's his poor decision making.
Our defense could make all the difference for Geno this season. If our D shits the bed and gives up 35 pts/game, Geno (or whoever is under center) will have to play lights out, air it out, and PRAY. And we'll finish the seasons 4-12 again. BUT if our D is as good as advertised and can hold teams to 20pts or less (and keep us in good field position), Geno can play a VERY relaxed, easy game plan with lots of high percentage, easy throws that don't go too far, but won't have to. A 200 yard passing day with another 100 on the ground, no turnovers, and a few key 3rd down scrambles thrown in for good measure will win a LOT of games.
Touche. There's no point in crunching the numbers because we agree that, at this moment, neither would be enough to take this team to a VLT.
I'm definitely not a Geno fan but to compare him to Brooks Bollinger is ridiculous, Bollinger was like watching a high school kid play in the NFL
