Tom Seaver diagnosed with dementia at 74. That isn’t good at all.

So sad to read that news. Before my time but I always wished I could have seen him. The greatest Mets player of all time. Probably top 10 starting pitcher of all time?

I didn't really see him in his prime, but you look at his stats and the universal acknowledgement from everyone as to how good he was and he has to be in the conversation.

One of my original childhood heroes and one of the reasons I became a Met fan.

Used to practice his throwing motion and delivery in front of a mirror when I was 10.

Me, my Dad and my brothers were at the game when he struck out 19 Padres, the last 10 in a row.

I think I remember watching that on TV. Was it a hot day, maybe a weekend or holiday weekend? I have a memory of being at a family BBQ or something

That's a lot. I wonder what kind of player he'll be at age 40?

It was a Wednesday, but it was the second day of Passover, so the New York City schools were closed. It was a sunny day, but not particularly hot (high 60s). I remember because (1) it was the first observance of Earth Day, and (2) I was at the game.

That is a lot, and I think that's going to be the high water mark for MLB players going forward ($35M/year). I don't see revenues justifying anything above that and Trout is considered the best player in baseball by a lot right now. Judge is going to get megabucks too. You would think Anaheim would have learned from the Pujols debacle though

So come CBA time it's going to be tougher for the MLBPA's to sell the collusion argument (Harper, Machado and now Trout).

It's clear that if anything is going on it's not showing up for the most elite free agents, but there's also no question that the market for the next tier has completely crashed. They used to get big long-term contracts, and now they're getting offered little or nothing. That's where the union is going to have to make their case, if they have one to make.

Yeah pretty much, except that the middle guys not getting paid are not getting paid because they are expect to (and actually do) fall off in production as predicted by analytics. Of course the problem for the union is that this predicted fall off can be replaced by younger players at pennies on the dollar. So yeah, those middle guys are never seeing those contracts again, however the union can do something about the younger guys getting paid more which is reasonable for everyone except players who missed the boat

It seems like contract extensions are all the rage nowadays. Which I think is smart for the team and the player. Mets are playing with fire.

With no hard salary cap extending deGrom is a complete no brainer. Which is why it's puzzling that Fred "No Brains" Wilpon isn't all on board.

Maybe the Sale extension will get the Coupons to realize that this is what teams that are actually successful do.

So Peter Alonso has to be the starting first baseman to start the season right?

Fred isn't really involved in the Mets, his idiot son Jeff runs the whole operation

Right, I meant Jeff "No Brains" Wilpon. Meanwhile, if they're going to do an extension with deGrom they'd better get their asses in gear. I expect that it won't happen.
