When Sam Darnold landed with the New York Jets with the No. 3 overall pick in April's draft, one prevailing thought was that the USC product could sit behind Josh McCown and learn for at least part of his rookie season. Since then we've only heard glowing praise of the rookie signal-caller, with the coaching staff noting Darnold has a shot to swipe the starting job during training camp, which opens later this month. The latest to trumpet applause for Darnold is the man he'll compete for that starting gig against -- McCown, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports. "With Sam, we have the right guy, he's wired the right way, he loves the game, he asks the right questions and he's willing to work..." McCown told SiriusXM NFL Radio over the weekend. "That's the foundation, you have to have that." Darnold will enter training camp as the No. 3 behind McCown and Teddy Bridgewater, but has a chance to leap both with impressive practices and preseason tilts. Rarely in today's NFL do highly drafted quarterbacks sit for an entire rookie season, especially one taken in the top 5
Thanks for posting this. McCown is a great influence in the locker room. Seeing how McCown is feeling about Darnold makes me more hopeful. Can't wait to see Darnold in his first preseason game at Metlife.
I know it's insane to think, but do you know how much pressure is going to be on him? like all of preseason everyone is waiting to see him. i wouldn't be surprised if he got a standing O when he takes the field
Its safe to say McCown is a better influence than Big Ben is.. Again, the Jets get lucky. Maybe things really are changing around here...

too bad stewart isn't putting in that effort. nice to hear about hansen though. sounds like he's gonna be ahead of stewart on the depth chart for sure
better delete this, dont want people thinking you are getting soft Darksider ... but even so Vader saw the light once again ...
How can you not like Uncle Josh. He is just a great dude that has a really good understanding of the game and seems to take a lot of pride in sharing that knowledge. If this regime stays together and isn't canned, I can't imagine a better QB coach than Uncle Josh. Make it happen Bowles.
Alas, I am in wait and see mode... I see some good things happening but I am more interested in results. As they say in Mizzou: "Show Me!"
I still can’t believe we got darnold I couldn’t believe we made the playoffs in 09 I couldn’t believe we were up v the colts in the afccg I couldn’t believe we beat the pats to go to the afccg in Pittsburgh I couldn’t believe we were a fg away from beating Pittsburgh in 04 I couldn’t believe we were a half away from going to the sb in 98/99 I couldn’t believe we were being considered sb favorites going in to 99 I couldn’t believe we were about to beat the browns to advance to a afccg All these things I just couldn’t believe were happening always ended the same way Jets . Guarded optimism is the best they get now .
Couldn't you wait at least until the guy has hit the field wearing a full uniform of green and white rather than red?
seriously.... dude's been wrong on QBs before, I'm almost a little discouraged that he's crowning Darnold already
he played at USC. Those guys are used to pressure. That part I am not worried about. I worry about his physical play; his footwork, his eyes, his accuracy, especially as a rookie. The mental challenges of pressure or handling personality/media challenges, this kid has got it
I got the impression that Bowles is set to start Darnold week 1 unless he bombs the PS. With all the quotes about Sam having every opportunity to win the job, it would paint a bad picture if he didn’t wind up starting. I’d think he would’ve been more reserved in his comments if he was leaning towards starting a veteran.
He tried to do the same with Petty and Hack last year IMO. If Darnold lights it up in training camp and the preseason against 1st stringers, he should start week 1.
well he's doing all the right things. he's basically living 24/7 football right now even bypassing celebrating his 21st birthday to work on his play
I'm thinking that maybe the Jets should give Hackenberg another chance. He did change his throwing motion in the off-season. At least there's that.
