I took a girl to Tad's before a Knicks game way back in 1972, and she was still willing to go out with me again, so big ups to me (although she did become Kosher a couple of years later, so maybe the steak had something to do with that). As to Brook's question, many people think that the two top steakhouses in NYC are Peter Luger and Keens (72 West 36 St). I've been to Keens several times (the last time being about a month ago), and it's really excellent. Besides steaks, it is famous for the mutton chop. Of course, like Peter Luger, it ain't cheap, but the service is way better. You can also admire the supposedly largest collection of clay pipes in the world, which are arrayed along the ceilings of the various rooms.
Yeah I heard about Keen's. Want to try them. What are the differences between Peter Luger and Keen's? Am I asking too much?
I haven't been to Peter Luger in a long time. From what I've heard the steaks are still great, but the experience is less so. The service is mediocre, and ambiance is nonexistent (it's loud and somewhat run down), and they don't take credit cards, so bring a lot of cash (they might take debit cards - I'm not sure). Don't get me wrong, as I said lots of people say it's the best in the city, but my only point is that I have never been disappointed at Keens (having been there four times in the last four or five years), and they are happy to take plastic (Amex, MC or Visa). Expect to spend around $100 per person at either place. You can also book a table at Keens online (OpenTable), which you cannot do at Peter Luger (telephone reservations only). Of course, one other difference is that Peter Luger is in Brooklyn and Keens is in Manhattan, so one or the other might be more convenient for you. By the way, it's Peter Luger, not Peter Luger's (you got that right), and Keens, not Keen's (you got that wrong). It's funny how many people add the 's to the end of both.
Well jeff. You are one of my idols you know that? I want to try them both actually. Waiting for my Grandpa @Cman60 to chime in.
Kean’s. Thousands of clay smoking pipes on the rafters, bunch of famous ones. Presidents, entertainers, Babe Ruth. Very unique place. Get their Legendary Mutton Chop, it’s the size of your head. Outstanding. But I guess that’d be like eating your date. That didn’t sound right.
Not a fan of Luger. Their steak sauce tastes like cocktail sauce and it takes an hour to get there. Having said that, we’re going to Brooklyn tomorrow nite, may stop in for a martini. They make a great one.
They have a great Knockwurst at the Blarney Stone on 8th Avenue. At least they used to in the dive bar days. I watched a '84 Celtics/Lakers Finals game in there one night rooting for Bird and he won. Lotta pissed Lakers fans in there that night haha. Surprised I made it out alive
Blarney Stone by the Trade Center was my lunchtime hangout for years. I could live on their brisket sammich.
Used to be a Blarney Stone on 3rd in the 40s. Loved that place. Honestly, best meatloaf I’ve ever had. And the gravy.
The Blarney Stones were a good hangout for sports and big games. Always a cast of characters in them too. I watched the '86 Mets WS games 6 and 7 wins in Clancy's on 86th street, which was just like a Blarney Stone. What a riot that was. I did a Keith in game 6 and retreated into my beer but my buddy kept saying they were alive. Place went nuts and he was screaming "I told you!!"
Full disclosure. My little one is gonna be 12 on July 19th. He has ADHD. He is going thru extensive Neuro Feedback Treatment. He finished 6th grade this year. At the beginning of the year they put him in the Special Ed English class due to his language learning disability. He got A+ in his first Marking Period. They moved him to Regular English Class in 2nd 3rd and 4th marking period. He got A, A+ and A+. At the end of the year they moved him to Accelerated English for 7th grade. My little one has only one luxury in life. Steak. I told him I am taking him to the best steakhouse in New York Metro area for achieving the unthinkable. All kidding aside, right now I am trying to decide the best one. So chime in and share your experiences. My little one deserves the best.
Bonus of the Blarney Stone by the trade center was the topless joint a couple of doors down. Many days we never made it back from lunch.
