One thing I cannot stand about pro sports these days is “tanking”. Aren’t these GM/Front Office guys supposed to be competitive? Spend your cap space, build the roster, try to win games. I’m sick of going through rebuilds when the team hasn’t made the playoff in 7 seasons. The NFL, NBA, MLB has to do something about this phenomenon. So when Bowles and McCagnan fail this year Woody is going to fire them and hire another bunch of geniuses to their version of a rebuild?
To win a Super Bowl in tomorrow's NFL, you have to string scoring possessions together and make it look easy. You need an extremely well-oiled OL, an abundance of skilled and versatile weapons, and a gifted offensive mind on the sideline. And I know it's NEVER been mentioned on this board before, but an awesome QB is pretty much standard too. So yeah, two years sounds right.
To answer your question.... Of course they can try to win a SB in the next two years. There certainly isn't anything stopping them from trying to get to a SB. There isn't any salary cap limitations for the NYJ. This team is just starved for talent. The Jets need a huge infusion of talent in order for them to compete for a title this season or next. However, if they really wanted to chase a title, they could go nuts in FA and go into win now mode. But that's just not going to happen. They tried just a few years ago. So in order for them to compete for a SB this year or next, they would need the following: 1) ALL of the players they add must be good from the very second they step on the field. Example Darron Lee is two years in the league and he still stinks. Mac must start picking players that make an immediate impact, not little twerps that are developmental players that you MIGHT get some decent play out of after 3 years. 2) They must add a QB. Right now the jets simply do not have a QB that is capable or durable. 3) They must get better coaching. Blowes simple is NOT a good enough HC for any of this to happen. Unless he can improve the way he does his job, the Jets will not have a prayer. 4) Mac must get better. Mac IMO is a marginal at best GM. Has he added talent to the team? Yes, but certainly not enough. This team is less talented now than when Mac started here. What's most concerning is he has not added any truly good players. Players that can make weekly highlight reels they are so good. Mac has not picked a single player that fits into that category. Even his BPA motto has NOT worked out especially well for him. Williams and Adams are above average players, but they are not players that get themselves noticed. They are more like lunch pail guys. Darron Lee is way below average and for a BPA, he's terrible.
Mac has to have a GM of the Year type off-season for us to win Super Bowl LIII. All his free agent signings have to work out tremendously, and he'll have to have a draft like the Saints had last year. Then Todd Bowles would have to become more of a go for it and play to win the game type gambler during those critical junctures of a close game. Do all that and the Jets could be a surprise team in 2018 like the 2017 Jags. Hopefully we have better quarterback play than the Jags.
Not impossible given the weakness of the AFC, but we would literally need to hit on 4-5 draft picks and all our free agent signings would need to have immediate impact. It's been done before, Seattle being a primary example, and close to it the Jags, but this is also assuming Maccagnan is capable of assembling the roster, and drafting flawlessly. I think he's gotten better at identifying players in the draft, but not nearly enough where I feel confident he won't whiff on a high pick. Also, how will the players he's selected already develop? Is Lee going to get better and play like he's a 1st rounder? We'll see what happens. One thing is for sure though, with 100 mil in cap space and a bunch of picks in high spots, the Jets will be hard pressed not to improve.
They can, but it will mean hitting a few home runs in this year's draft(Mac and scouting department must come through here), signing young impact players in free agency, Bowles becoming a coach who plays to win instead of trying to not lose, and some good luck. In other words, a perfect storm of events that has a slim chance of happening.
I don't think we are at Super Bowl level yet, but no doubt in my mind with a strong draft and the right pieces in free agency, we can be a playoff team. Think division round, possibly championship game if things fall our way.
It will take at least 2 years to get a playoff caliber team built due to the lack of talent on the roster. And that's if Mac\Bowles hit on draft picks and free agency. So the answer is no.
This is probably Jets biggest deterrent at this point, but perhaps if we somehow get a FQB, Bowles mistakes will be somewhat masked. If not, well, we've all seen what he's all about these past 3 seasons
The thing is, it will take not only a FQB, but a FQB with a winning record, who has the stones and the reputation enough to disregard Bowles and do what he needs to do to win, regardless of what Bowles says. The only guys who fit that category would be someone like Brady, Rodgers, Brees, maybe Big Ben, and none of them will be on the Jets. The news of Bowles's extension was depressing, but watching what a GOOD coach can do in the SB was even more so.
Build for the future and stick to rebuild.. DONT HIRE COUSINS...Spend 34 Mil wisely on key position e.g. Edge Rusher and more Draft a QB OL etc or a Combo with FA Set the Table ..Get the TALENT THEN FIRE BOWLES Even if he read Bellicheks Books on Coaching or got private tutoring from D Peterson it would not help Macdoodling is another culprit ..no way he can morph into H Roseman and hire .a Pederson Foles and draft a Wentz Till then ...not a chance This is why I want to root for somebody else ..sick of this cycle
It's not so much disregarding him, but Bowles has always relied on veterans. Perhaps if we land a veteran QB like Cousins, with a guy like Bates running the show, the offense will be able to function. I was startled by how good Pederson was in comparison to Bowles. Conservative coaching is how you lose in the NFL and Pederson showed massive balls, all on the biggest stage. There's a lot of things that need to shake out before we get a better sense of what this jets team will be able to do next season. I think we are going to have a lot of new faces on this team, key will be making sure these new faces are coached up and can help immediately.
Ok I made a surefire list. So in no specific order 1.Fire Bowles, set him adrift in the Hudson River for all I care 2.Fire Mac, sorry pal you had 18 years as an evaluator/GM to find a QB and you went 0/18, peace out... 3.Hire a GM who is dead set on getting a Quarterback and has had some success in finding the right QB before. Anyone who mentions defense in their GM interview will be tarred and feathered before being kindly asked to leave the premises. 4.Hire a younger offensive minded coach who has experience working with Quarterbacks specifically, any defensive coach will be denied interview. 5.Sign Jarvis Landry- perfect safety blanket for new rookie QB, also has bonus of fucking the Dolphins over. 6.Sign oline free agents- protecting your QB is just as important as giving him weapons, Oline is also an acceptable position to draft with one of our earlier picks. 7.Never ever draft a non pass rushing defensive lineman, they are absolutely worthless and easily found on the scrap heap of free agency 8. Keep Kearse long term- extremely underrated and clutch receiver who will greatly help the young QB 9. Change the damn shitty fucking logo, it doesn't resemble a Jet in the slightest and depresses everyone. Go back to the 80's helmet at least. 10. Fire the whole staff down to the equipment managers, everyone on staff associated with the mediocrity needs to go. 11. Don't draft BPA until the late rounds 12. Dont cut Robby Anderson, use his situation as an opportunity to get him long term and super cheap. 13. Draft a running back in this stacked 2018 class. 14. Never punt down 13 points at midfield on 4th and 2 with 3 minutes left.....
15. Hire a President of Football Operations (or whatever you want to call it) who KNOWS how to build a winning franchise and let him hire everyone below him.
