I hope he keeps playing, taking others' money so that he completely destroys his reputation and never even sniffs the HOF.
I already see it. If Alex Smith comes to the Jets, his new name will be Alex Schmuck. Yeah, we Jets fans love our players.
Alex Smith 5 seasons as starter in KC: 2013-17 Passing Yards 17,608 Completions 1,587 Attempts 2,436 Completion Percent 65.15% Touchdowns 102 Interceptions 33 Interception Percentage 1.35% Yards per attempt 7.23 Record as starter 50-26 Born: May 7, 1984 (Age: 33-246d) Alex Smith Playoff Stats in KC: 2013-2017 Passing Yards 1,250 Completions 120 Attempts 185 Completion Percent 64.86% Touchdowns 9 Interceptions 2 Yards per attempt 6.76 Record as starter 1-4 Kirk Cousins 3 seasons as starter in DC: 2015-2017 Passing Yards 13,176 Completions 1,132 Attempts 1,689 Completion Percent 67.02% Touchdowns 81 Interceptions 36 Interception Percentage 2.13% Yards per attempt 7.80 Record as starter 24-23-1 Born: August 19, 1988 (Age: 29-142d) Kirk Cousins Playoff Stats in DC: 2015-2017 Passing Yards 329 Completions 29 Attempts 46 Completion Percent 63.04% Touchdowns 1 Interceptions 0 Yards per attempt 7.15 Record as starter 0-1 Alex Smith's stats this season were the best of his career finishing with a 104.7 quarterback rating. Alex Smith has been to the playoffs 4 seasons out of 5 as the starter in KC. Kirk Cousins has only led the Redskins to the playoffs 1 season out of 3 as the starter in DC. Another thing Alex Smith does better than Kirk Cousins, is he takes better care of the ball. Alex Smith this season threw the least amount of interceptions (5) of all quarterbacks with 500 or more attempts. Tom Brady (8 int's) was the 2nd best protecting the ball amongst that group. As long as Mac doesn't give up a 1st day draft pick for Alex Smith then I would approve of trading for him. I wouldn't give Smith an extension unless he took the Jets to the Super Bowl. Alex Smith's cap hit for 2018 is I believe 17,000,000 which was the same hit Wilkerson would have been for the Jets next season. Mac could basically release Wilkerson, and use that cap space to off-set Alex Smith's cap hit. That is better bang for the Jets salary cap buck.
Can we pause and take a second to process all this? Alex Smith is coming of arguably the best year of his career, playoff appearances 4 out of the last 5 years, a better than 4 to 1 TD to INT ration in the playoffs, yada yada yada. Yet KC and it's fanbase "CAN'T WAIT" [say like Bart Scott] to usher him out in lieu of Mahomes. For the past few weeks, Louis Riddick of ESPN has been reporting that inside the Chiefs they are "beyond giddy" with what they have in Mahomes. He said Mahomes makes "stupid throws" in practice and that he is special and to remember his name. I find it funny and sad that some Jets fans want Alex Smith and/or Mayfield this offseason, when who we passed on the guy that will and has beat them out for a job respectively. What's next, we trade a 2nd rounder for the Giants' David Webb, another one of Mahomes' victims?
But THIS year was the "Year of the QB!". No need to "reach" for Mahomes or Watson when so many "can't miss" prospects would be coming out!
I wanted Watson last year but we have to move forward and play with the hand we have this off-season. Alex Smith is just an option this off-season in regards to Mac addressing the qb position with a veteran before the upcoming draft. Watson isn't an option. Mahomes isn't an option. At some point you must decide to move forward.
Is that supposed to mean something to me??? Alex Smith fails in the playoffs every single year. He just got shut out in the 2nd half and blew an 18 point lead. Meanwhile they traded 2 first round picks for Mahomes, of course they are eager to play him. None of this means he is any damn good
Yeah, they need to make changes anyway. I wonder what the cap situation is too? I get the impression they need to reconfigure, but I don't know that.
I understand moving forward, but "Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it", The Jets have been repeating it for decades.
How did Alex Smith 'blow' an 18 point lead? Does he play defense? That loss was not on Smith at all imo... The two first round picks you mentioned are the reason they are antsy to play Mahomes. In terms of the fans, they always love the backup, especially when drafted.
5-10, 33 yards passing. 0 points in the second half, failed on 4th down, failed when gifted a muffed punt at the 25 yard line. He blew it
So because Smith is more conservative he's the better QB? He isn't. Sorry. He's older, he's Captain Checkdown and he should have done a lot more in his career than he has done. He's also had a heck of a lot better talent around him on offense and defense, not to mention Head Coach, than Kirk Cousins has ever had. I can't wait to see Cousins outside of that mess in DC.
I think Smith is married to Reid, and that team as it was put together. I'm worried that we think we can take Smith and make him work for us in a similar way. That's gonna make me worried if we do that. I think I'd rather have McCown*. Ima be happy tho with Cousins *with the idea of going with a QB in the draft also.
18 points (on Smith) and less than a half to play, that's enough for the run game and Defense to lock up. There was also fluky breaks like the batted pass TD, Kelce injury, and the botched call by the officals. No way this loss falls on him. I'd say Smith's play was the least of their problems this game.
Losing his all pro tight end Kelce definitely impacted the game for the Chiefs. That and the Chiefs defense not being able to stop the Titans run game. Mahomes would have wet himself in that situation. Watson on the other hand....can't see him getting blanked in the 2nd half.
