Comparing 3 drafts against 2006, 2007, and 2008. Tanny's first 3 years as our GM:

    Mac Tanny

    2015. 2006

    Leonard Williams. D'Brichashaw Ferguson
    Devin Smith. Nick Mangold
    Lorenzo Mauldin. Kellen Clemens
    Bryce Petty. Anthony Schlegel
    Jarvis Harrison. Eric Smith
    Brandon Marshall. Brad Smith
    Deon Simon. Leon Washington
    Jason Pociask
    Drew Coleman
    Titus Adams

    2016. 2007

    Darron Lee. Darelle Revis
    Christian Hackenberg. David Harris
    Jordan Jenkins. Jacob Bender
    Justin Burris. Chansi Stuckey
    Brandon Shell
    Lac Edwards
    Charone Peake

    2017. 2008

    Jamal Adams. Vernon Gholston
    Marcus Maye. Dustin Keller
    Ardarius Stewart. Dwight Lowery
    Chad Hansen. Erik Ainge
    Jordan Leggett. Marcus Henry
    Dylan Donahue. Nate Garner
    Elijah McGuire. Kris Jenkins
    Jeremy Clark
    Derrick Jones

So what do you think? Who's done the better job through the first 3 years? Quite frankly, if anything Tanny did a better job. Tanny drafted Darelle Revis and traded for Kris Jenkins. Both of them were difference makers.

Tanny started off red hot with his first 2 drafts, but started to fade once we hit the 2008 draft.
08,09,10 we got little value out of our draft picks, mostly because Tanny was a little too eager to give away draft picks.

Tanny's biggest problem was his inability to play hard ball with our own free agents. Instead of letting a couple good players walk rather than overpaying them (the Patriot's way) he gave out $10 mil per year contract extensions like candy.

You could say what you want about lack of depth, etc. but Tanny wasn't afraid to move up and get players like Revis or even Sanchez when others would have settled for much less. While Sanchez didn't work out we really didn't pay all that much to move up for him.

While there would ultimately be a price for us to pay Tanny also massaged the cap for Parcells and Ryan so they could get an extra year or two to chase the dragon instead of having to rebuild sooner.

It was pretty obvious that Mangini was the brains behind his first two drafts. In fact our drafting during the Rex Ryan era is really what set this franchise back

I've gone through this in the Draft forum with regards to Sanchez and Rex. Tanny was the GM so he gets the credit for the hits just like he gets the blame for the misses.

Unfair to judge really. You know how DBrick, Mangold, Leon Washington, Revis, and Harris' careers ended up, so your mind gives the edge to Tanny naturally. Way too early to judge Mac's drafts overall.

Obviously 2008 was bad, but 2006 solidified the o-line for a decade, and 2007 drafted a potential HOF in Revis and solid MLB in Harris. Pretty good job by Tanny.

2015 had a solid first pick in Williams, the rest nothing special. 2016 Lee looks to be getting better, Jenkins is good, Hack still up in the air but not looking good, Shell looks good so a solid draft. 2017 Adams and Maye look great, I like Stewart and Hansen, McGuire too. Donahue had a lot of potential before he was injured. So really I would call it a toss up, but knowing how the drafts ended up gives Tannenbaum the edge for now.

What many fans are missing is that the Head coaches are choosing the direction of the draft. The GM does his best to move up or down and to manage the cap but Mangini wisely used high picks on both sides of the ball while Rex and Bowles pounded the table for the defensive players needed for their "systems" to work.

No GM worth his salt is going to draft a lineman or a running back if his head coach "needs a DE" to anchor his 3-4 defense.

Yeah but Tanny needs to be judged on his whole body of work. He had a couple good drafts and the rest of our competitiveness came from free agent imports. His drafts from 2008 to 2012 were BAD. Hyperbole aside, that 5 year stretch has to rank among the absolute worst in the NFL over that period. Take that five year drafting span, put Idzik's disastrous 2013 and 2014 drafts as the cherry on top, and it's no wonder why we're sitting in the situation we're in right now. Anyone figuring Mac was going to patch it up in just a few years is smoking crack. This is a 5 year rebuild at minimum. This year we're going to start with the free agent band-aid approach for good measure, which is absolutely necessary. You just can't draft enough talent in a 3 or 4 year span to fix the absolute talent vacuum that we were left with by our two previous clown GMs.

Tanny is the only GM that got us two chances to win an AFC Championship. If Herm would have let his kicker win the Steelers game instead of trying to manage the clock we would have had a third shot.

This^^^. Mac may not have made that “home run” pick yet but I think he’s getting better, as evidenced by his picks of Adams & Maye. In my mind, this draft/FA period, will tell us just how far Mac has come. We’re in a good draft position and have a ton of $$$ to spend, this is the perfect time for Mac to add major improvements to our roster.

Tanny drafted whoever the Coach told him.

Mangini got a royal screwjob. He knew personnel and had he been given a chance to grow as a coach we would have been better off.

As soon as Rex came, our drafts became horrific.

    Jesus fucking Christ.

Tannyball 101 starts with fucking CAP HELL. Don't just take my words for it. Just look up Dolphags cap situation this year for Christ's sake. [20m to Tannechoke and 20+M to Suh to begin with. They are committing unholy amount of their cap space to a fucking HANDFUL. That's the theme with Tanny salary structure. It's very unhealthy.]

If you miss Tanny, you do need to get off football. GM responsibility reaches far beyond FA acquisition and draft picks.

Mangini was screwed as soon as Spygate became a thing. He wanted to shut down the Pats sideline taping at the Meadowlands but instead created a huge controversy that snowballed out of control.

Spygate became the big story of NFL 2007 and by the time it was over Mangini's relationship with Belichik and Kraft was finished and his grasp on the reins in NY was weakened by the Jets poor showing after Chad's various injuries that year. He basically had nobody championing his career except for Tanny and Woody and Woody became disenchanted when the Jets folded down the stretch in 2008.

That and Favre getting injured. A healthy Brett Favre could have saved Rich Kotite.

It's almost impossible to compare GM to GM due to the different coaches under them. It also isn't fair to compare due to the varying cap situations each year. None of us have any idea the extent each coach has in persuading the GM that this guy or that guy in a typical draft is "the guy" to take. The level of talent in each draft being different also is a factor when considering need and cap space each year. As an example, what if.... The year we drafted Revis out of need, we couldn't sign him unless we dropped another position of need off of the team?
There are so many things to consider.
Especially when one coach leaves the team or gets fired, and the next coach inherits a roster that was made for the previous coach, or the players rebel against the incoming coach.
Truth is the current pool of coaches in the NFL today seem to lack some of the major qualities that made the coaches of eras past great. Where are the innovators like Bill Walsh, Buddy Ryan, or traditionalists like Don Shula, Chuck Knoll, or Bill Parcells? The coaches of today all want to zip thru the ranks of positions coach, to coordinator to head coach as fast as they can. Some don't even have to move thru the ranks very long at all. We have situations where guys are coaching players that are older than they are.
    Same situation with GM's.
Common people may as well put in their applications for employment.
Drafts mean nothing if there isn't a coach there to develope the talent and make each player as good as they can be.

I feel bad that these guys have to work for a bum like Woody Johnson but I could not disagree more. You are what your record says you are. Everyone that got fired sealed their own fate.

The only guy that didn't get a fair shake to my mind was Al Groh. It would have been interesting to see what he could have done with another year or two.
