After years of speculation over whether he'd ever return coaching, Jon Gruden is transitioning from the broadcast booth to the sideline.

The Raiders are planning to introduce Gruden as their next head coach during a news conference on Tuesday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports. Gruden was the leading candidate for the position even before the Raiders fired coach Jack Del Rio after Sunday's season finale. The veteran coach will interview with the team Monday, Rapoport adds.

Gruden compiled a 95-81 record during his first run as an NFL head coach from 1998-2008. After coaching the Raiders for four seasons, he guided the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to their first and only Super Bowl title during the 2002 season. He won five divisional titles during his 11 combined seasons with the Raidersand Bucs.

Since 2009, Gruden has served as a color commentator for the ESPN's Monday Night Football broadcasts.

Before Raiders owner Mark Davis unceremoniously closed out the Del Rio era on Sunday, team ownership reportedly was confident Gruden would agree to coach the Raiders again, Rapoport reported.

He'll now be tasked with turning around a mercurial Raiders team that failed to build upon the promise of its 12-4 mark in 2016.

Around The NFL will have more on Gruden's return to the Raiders soon.

This is his coaching staff from... Ian Rappaprt-

#Raiders coach Jon Gruden has 3 key hires already in place: #Rams QB coach Greg Olson as OC, #Bengals DC Paul Guenther as DC, #Cowboys special teams coach Rich Bisaccia as ST.

no way he finishes out the full 10 years. that's an insane commitment to a coach. still with that said, i'd expect gruden to make them a winning franchise, especially with all the talent they have

    Nothing, lol.

It's why Gruden went there prolly and will be the reason Gruden succeeds, if indeed he does succeed. :)

p.s. I wanted us to pick him too but knew we wouldn't :(

yeah taking over a team with a young FQB in place. an explosive offense and a decent defense is a good way to start. I htink they need to get a better RB but that should be easy in this draft. it's deep at RB. also add another WR as well and then build the defense. OAK has a lot of pieces in place. they could have made the SB last year if not for carr getting hurt

To think that the size and length of this contract is about performance on the field is crazy - not only is he not worth that kind of money for that, only Belichick 10 years ago would be. This is much more about the move to Las Vegas and him being the extremely media-friendly face of the franchise there. He'll shmooze with the high rollers, have the best press conferences in the world, and make appearances with Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. Even if he doesn't win the Super Bowl they'll give him five years in Vegas for that reason alone. They probably won't actually move to Vegas until 2020, which means I would put the over/under at him making 7 years of the 10.

Fake news, there's already a thread on TGG claiming otherwise, it's got to be true!

One of the most overrated coaches I've ever seen.

And he's been away for a long time.

Severely overpaid head coach. Severely overpaid starting qb.

    The Raiders are f'n stupid.
