Peyton Manning was born as a HoF QB from day 1. There goes your argument.

Petty was drafted as a 4th round flyer. Even McCagnan knows that any QB drafted after the 2nd round has low probability to become a starter in the league regardless of “development”.

Also the idea that Gailey didn’t work with Hackenberg is absurd. The organization drafted Hackenberg because he combines prototypical size and arm strength with great character, intelligence, and work ethic. The Jets knew his mechanics were an absolute mess, but thought that if they could “coach him up” they’d have something. The Broncos drafted Tebow for similar reasons (plus athleticism) and looked at how that turned out.

The truth about Hackenberg is that just never was going to be accurate enough to make it in this league.

So Jethro, are you really trying to sell us on the notion that QB's don't need to be coached up or that Gailey actually did work with Mackenberg and Petty? Sorry, but that is complete and utter nonsense. No less an expert than John Morton said these kids had nothing from the first 2 years under Gailey.

It doesn't matter what measurables you come into the league with, you have to learn the game and you have to learn the system you're playing in to be successful. How many QB's has Gailey ever developed again? "Coaching a player up" = Developing that player no matter what the position is. If Macc knew going in that any QB drafted after the second round would bust, what was the point of drafting Petty especially if he traded up to do that? Again, that makes zero sense and should raise serious questions about the competency of the GM.

Macc fell in love with Mackenberg and there was no one who was gonna stop him from drafting Mackenberg if he were available. From what I've read, not everyone in the organization was in love with the pick but Macc was the shotcaller and we got who we got.

Riddle me this..Why is Petty still on the roster? Since Bowles isn't gonna play the rookies, it would have made more sense to simply release Petty and make Mackenberg the #2

Peyton Manning came out of the womb with a football in his oversized hands. Unless you're drafting a Peyton Manning or any other generational QB, its a good idea to develop them until the "light comes on". Dak was drafted late and so was Brady. What are the odds that the NY Jets draft talent like that so late given their sterling record of drafting All-Pro QB's over their history? Not saying it can't happen, but I wouldn't bet any coin on it. The next Generational QB the Jets draft will be their first. (Namath won the SB.. check).

So, the Jets should continue on their present course of paying Vet FA QB's to manage the offense and bypass drafting young QB's unless of course they come in the 1st rd. ready to play from day 1. Usually, that takes a pretty high DP (and a lot of luck) but who knows... Even then, they still have to play and learn the game and get the right coaching in place. Jared Goff comes to mind. Sucked last year, destroyer this year.

You watched him play in which pre-season? This last one when the snap count was mostly Mackenberg? The preseason where he made the most of his chances with the scrubs because Macc was hell bent on Mackenberg getting the starting job? The preseason where Bowles didn't allow Petty to play with the starters? Perhaps you mean last year's regular season when he won a game on the road with a team that had already quit on the season, an OLine that couldn't block kittens and an OC with his head so far up his ass he didn't even know it was 2016 along with game plans that took the ball out of the kids hands? Almost as bad as what they did to Geno in a real game I think it was on Monday Night too.

2015, 2016, and 2017. You're wasting your time. Bryce Petty is a career back up player, and that is ok.

The Jets got this whole thing backwards from the start of the preseason. Hack/Petty should have been starting from day 1 and one of them should've been the opening day starter. McCown should have been an insurance policy if Hack/Pettt actually stunk it up.

couldn't agree more, the entire TC, preseason was a joke. Petty never got a fair chance at all and I also agree that neither kid got any "coaching" that made a difference in their 1st 2 years. If they did, we wouldn't be playing a 38 year old that is limited and had brain freezes every game.

It's ok to be wrong about a guy and he ends up being the greatest of all time. Too bad that Petty isn't Tom Brady. He can aspire to be Brady Quinn though.

    With all due respect:

You just don't seem to get it. :D

Either QBs are born with it, or they don't. Peyton had it. Brady has it. Obviously, Petty doesn't have it. Neither does Hack. The omniscient board posters said so. :D

When you draft a QB, he gets at best one shot. If he fails, you move on. Yes. REGARDLESS OF WHO TRAINS THEM, HOW WELL HE TRAINS THEM, AND FOR HOW LONG. Giving them [chance]? That's blasphemous.

So - the franchise QB is such an elusive player. Everybody wants to draft him. Not everybody succeeds at it.

P.S. I am reminded of certain QB named Drew Brees that even won a SB after getting shitcanned out of a certain team, but don't let the fact delude you.

That's a lie Petty played the best out of the 3. Hackenberg was the worst and McCown played the least 1 game.

By that logic why is McCown still in the league. It's obvious he's never had it.

When is Hackenberg gonna have that good preseason game against the hardware guys. He played against the same 3rd and 4th string and still sucked.

Bills, at 5-4, are pulling Taylor in favor of Peterman - they want to see what they have in the kid before pulling the trigger this spring.

In the meantime in Jetland, the coach preaches [Best chance to win] bullshit, and somehow almost everybody knows both Hack and Petty suck beyond redemption without even seeing them in action all that much. That is, AFTER 4-6 RECORD.

    Oh the irony.

    ----------------------------

McClown might give this team the best chance to win - Maybe. BUT that just isn't high enough to win games. [Hence 4-6 record.] And it is compromising the future at the same time. Double-whammy, if I had to add my two cents.
