We know the offense will be bad, but how good can the defense be?

We all know the offense is going to suck (like it has for over a decade) but lets talk about the potential of the defense

D-line: for the 1st time we'll have wilkerson, richardson, and williams all playing and healthy. Wilkerson was coming back from an injury for 2016 and richardson has been suspended a few times. The potential of the 3 probably make them the top unit in the NFL. wilkerson is a pro bowler, williams is in year 3 and was a pro bowler and DROTY, and richardson was DROTY the year before williams. all 3 are "10 sack capable" talents and can be sued in rotation to stay fresh. Richardson is also motivated by being in a contract year and wilk is motivated by his poor 2016 season and has been impressing in camp. at DT McLendon cooled off after a hot 1st week last year, but playing along side the big 3 DEs should afford him plenty of opportunities. You can't double team everyone right? Deon Simon also showed some potential as a depth guy to rotate in. Overall it's very possible the jets have the best d-line in football (at worst a top 5 one) and games are won in the trenches. pressure on the QB can help out in coverage and force turnovers.

LBers: The jets don't have much proven here, but we do have a lot of young guys with potential. Lee (2106 1st round pick) has the talent, but struggled as a rookie. his cover skills were lacking and he often overran plays. If he can learn from his mistakes and grow as a player he has the ability to be a great ILB for us. He's very "vilma" like in his skill set. undersized but fast. Playing next to him will be davis, who we acquired in a tarde with cleveland, but is a player we drafted and let walk. He took a paycut after joining us. He also has the talent but has the same issues lee struggled with. he's still proven to be a solid ILB with iffy cover skills. RBs and TEs can get the better of our LBers for sure and could be a weakness but sideline to sideline tackling should be no issues. Onto the outside we have 2nd year and 3rd year LBers starting. Jenkins and Moulden. Both showcased pass rushing skills at times but also made plenty of mistakes. Moulden appears to be a 1 trick pony, but jenkins showed he can play the run and the pass in limited snaps coming off an injury. Moulden could be moved to DE (the depth chart suggests as such) leaving bishop and martin fighting for the spot. OLB will clearly be a weak link in the defense but could be covered by the d-line play

Secondary: The big 2 rookies 1st and 2nd round picks adams and maye have been impressive in camp. If they can translate that sucess in games, they could be one of the best duo's in the league, of course they could also struggle. Rookies are always a crapshoot. Early indications are both are the real deal. maye has been credited with 2 pick 6's this week and adams a few sacks. The defense is creating turnovers in practice, but it's a big difference facing josh and hack over facing Qbs like brady. For CB, it is still iffy. clayborne is a great CB when healthy, the issue is you can't trust him to stay healthy. Outside of him though the CB position is a toss up. Skrine (best suited as a #3) Burris (2016 rookie) Williams (entering his 4th season) have all had ups and downs. williams had a great 2015 campaign but struggled last season. Burris is too new to tell but has been getting beat in practice. bowles seems to love him though. Skrine is a nickel back we miscast as a starter. he was good when playing with revis and cromartie but wasn't able to stand on his own. We have depth but the number 2 CB slot is a toss up at this point. roberts and mcdougle add depth and 2 late pick rookie flyers (one coming off an ACL injury and one converted WR who only started 3 games at CB n college) Another unit that could impress or fall flat

So with all that said, whats the verdict? well I fully expect to have a top 5 d-line and that alone can cover up issues elsewhere. but really outside of injury concerns, CB2, and OLB i think we have a good defense on paper. It has potential and might be the only thing worth watching for us this season.

When you've drafted 9 straight defensive players in the first round, I'd expect the defense to be good. Our first rounders make up almost an entire defense.

    DL: Wilkerson, Richardson, Williams
    LB: Coples, Lee
    CB: Wilson, Milliner
    S: Pryor, Adams

The D will be limited by the O's ineptitude.

Teams will know going in that the Jets offense will be lucky to score 10 points so they aren't gonna take many chances once they get up by a couple of scores.

They're gonna be on the field A LOT.

It will be great for the first two quarters before being gassed by constant three-and-outs.

Maye and Adams will probably play more defensive snaps this season than most rookies do in 3.

And that d would still be questionable at corner and backer.

It doesn't really matter if the D is playing 45 out of the 60 possible minutes in a game. They'll be gassed early in the 4th qtr. regularly.

I don't get how our D can get 'gassed' even if they had to play the entire game.

From snap to whistle there are only 10-12 minutes of 'action' TOTAL in a 3 hour game. Now divide that between O and D.

If our D is out there for 50 plays with about 6 seconds ticking off the clock for each play, they rack up 5 total minutes of play time during a 3 hr game. How the fuck does ANYONE get 'gassed' running plays for 5 minutes over 3 hours? I know they do but I don't get it.

The jets offense maybe the worse in the NFL. The Jets defense maybe on the field for 35-40 minutes this year which is insane. When your offense can't sustain drives it puts more pressure on the defense to deliver. I could see a ton of 3 and outs and the defense trying it's best. I do see potential of this defense being good but it just won't be sustainable. 4th quarter teams will be having their way with the Jets defense, and it's going to suck.

If the defense stays healthy they'll win a couple of games for us this year. Hopefully that's the only games we win.

How soon people forget. Your example really doesn't take into account how much energy expended by players on each down. If a defense can't get off the field, they play until they can. You see it on long drives. You see it late in games where the offense simply runs the ball down a defense' throat. Missed and arm tackling, Qb not seeing any pressure, blitzes coming late, all of it are a signs of a defense that is fatigued from being on the field too long.

Watch this team this year. If the defense is always on the field, they will get tired as they are not machines, but human. If the offense can't generate long drives, the defense will play more, expend more energy and eventually wear down. By the end of the season, you'd be lucky to get 2 quality qtrs out of the defense.

Example: If they send their best receiver on a fly pattern, then he has to be covered by our top DB and maybe doubled. On the next play they can substitute a different WR and send him on a fly pattern. We can't substitute our good DB to give him a rest, he has to cover that sub on the next play as well. Multiply that by the number of plays an dominating O gets to run and you have a gassed defense.

Good example. Another would be the effect of the "hurry up" offense has on a defense. This style doesn't allow for substitutions by the defense and the result usually is a defense on its heels. If an offense keeps this up for any substantial length of time during a game, you'll see the defense not only bend, but inevitably break.

On top of that, in my experience in sports, reacting to a play, or defending, expends more energy than executing a play.

The defense can be as good as any to be honest. There's a lot of talent there, some raw some proven. You don't need a team of pro-bowlers to be competent or above average.

Word....I remember dominated NE with TOP (I think we had the ball over 45 mins) and we still found a way
Yeah I know exactly what you're saying...see it every game. I'm just saying it's hard to believe a D wears down after just 5-6 minutes of action spread across 3 hours. Players spend over 90% of the game with their hands on their hips waiting for TV timeouts or on the sidelines waiting for their turn.

Got ya....but still, a defender is actually 'running' or 'tackling' less than 5-6 minutes per game (snap to whistle times 50 plays). So yes, our top DB has to chase a WR for 6 minutes. Soccer stars run non-stop for over an hour....no timeouts. That's 10 times more than NFL players.

All the money in the world poured into the Defense...no science here..they will be decent

Based on Preseason Game tonight they look OK to me

Essentially the Jets have saved TBs career so at least when he is ousted here his Defense stats, what he knows best, will salvage things for him

Of course, the Offensive line and an aggressive pursuit to draft QBs every year is just an afterthought

Leonard Williams wasn't DROTY. Just sayin. He is going to be All-Pro though, which is way better.

Yes as a direct result of our gutsy defense I expect at least 6 wins this year

If the offense gets 3 and outs every drive, our defense will crack no matter how good they are.
