Howard is playing on his RFA tender, which might explain.

Sanchez, Hill, Greene, Geno. Not exactly late round draft picks. I agree it's not close to the number of defensive players he's drafted early but he is a defensive minded HC. It's to be expected.

He's brought in many defensive players via FA who have come in and played really well for us. He doesn't just sit back and draft guys in the first round, he's found players through other avenues as well.

Your best point is that Rex has drafted for defense every year (and don't insult us by saying Rex has nothing to do with the draft) and yet the overall defense has regressed. Anyone who can't see that the jets need a change at head coach must be satisfied with the perennial mediocrity Rex gives us. It's really funny--the Rex lovers on this board heap mountains of praise on Rex with a rare jet win--When the jets lose it's because Rex doesn't have the talent. Good formula for years of continued mediocrity (at best) under Rex.

That's not even a great point, though. Out of 5 drafts 2009-present, we've had 28 picks and used 19 on offense (10 out of 13 from 09-11!). The real problem has been that we've only had 28 draft picks since 2009. That has prevented the acquisition of real depth and more importantly, magnified the misses in drafting players. It's why Tannenbaum was rightly fired and it's highly questionable how much of it has to with Rex Ryan.

Not to mention, only 14 out of possible 24 in the top 4 rounds.

But Ryan sucks. Right? He a. runs the draft and consistently drafts defense all the fucking time. b. negotiates contracts and gives stupid contracts to stupid players. c. brings in past-prime FAs only to see them fail. What else did I miss? I knew Rex Ryan was the secret GM of this Jets team. I knew it.

You're fooling yourself if you honestly believe that Rex wasnt a major part in bringing in the past ex Baltimore players. Those players have Rex written all over them.

    1. Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard actually worked out pretty fine, didn't it?
    2. Rex was a major part in bringing them in - that much is true. After that, who else? Braylon? Santonio? Mason? How about Faneca, or Woody or Moore? That's also Ryan decision, right? Get a grip, numbskull.

Just to state the blindingly obvious, in case someone hasn't already mentioned it.

The defense doesn't play in a vacuum, perhaps the decline in offense, the many 3 and outs (league leading this year if I saw it correctly during the game) and vast increase in turnovers over the last few years has also affected the defense stat line with then being in on the field for long periods of times and in bad situations

Also it goes without saying Mevi$ effectively hasn't played for the jets for 2 seasons now.

It is clear to me Rex should stay unless it is a case of the GM simply wanting his own man. The defense is young and a few pieces away to becoming dominant, it would be criminal to throw away Rex's work. Marty should be given more time,

If you want to argue that Rex is overrated don't look at the defensive side of the ball. His defenses especially the last 3 years have been on the field the entire game. Not to mention the fact that our qb's hemorrhage turnovers. The past three years the offense has had so many games where they have these runs of 3 and outs and on top of that they must have been responsible for at least 100 points a year against the defense whether its direct scores or short fields.

Our defenses were nothing special until Rex got here. This year the defense is why we win 7 games. The pass defense struggled because he lost the best corner to ever play the game and had to lean on a rookie who took til week 16 to show some life, and a vet that has had an up and down career who through in a down year.

I haven't been happy with the talent on offense, and the play calling on offense while Rex has been here but I think if you give Rex a qb he'll win 11-12 games every year. It's tough to be a good coach with a bad qb. I would like to see Rex back for that reason. We'll see what happens.

Rex has a near top 10 or top 10 defense every year with basically the worst offense. If this offense could eat clock and do a better job he would have a top 5 defense year in and year out.

I will say last year every team ran on us and the Jets were a soft defense. This year every team throws on the Jets so there hasn't been the consistency on defense you would expect from a defensive coach who has committed so many resources to the defense.

Are you serious? Rex beats his chest over and over that he is a defensive genius--the jets have invested their last 4 NUMBER ONE PICKS on defense, but you say "it is highly questionable how much of it has to do with Rex Ryan." You're right, Rex wanted all 4 of those picks to be on offense, didn't he? The GM on every team always picks the exact opposite of what the head coach wants. Your logic is highly questionable.

Rex Ryan is a very good NFL head coach

IF Idzik lets him go, it will be the FIRST MAJOR screwup of Idzik's tenure as GM of the NYJ

hopefully, he makes the obvious right decision and Rex is extended for three seasons or more

Yes, hes so good the team hasn't made the playoffs in 3 straight years now and a million other reasons. Enough with the blowing of Rex Mitch. You seriously need to get off his sack.

you do realize that the identity of the coach is only a small part of the success or failure of any team? how well a team performs is massively down to the quality of the talent on the field and in particular the QB - look at the teams which have the best records in the NFL - wow - who would've thunk it - most of them have top tier QBs - now look at those with the worst - again - wow - they nearly all have poor quality QBs - but no I am sure its because all the coaches for the teams with great QBs are awesome and those with poor Qbs are terrible (and the fact that a teams performances go out the window when the starting top tier QB goes down is just a weird coincidence).

Rex had a large say for drafting Sanchez and even deemed him as "his guy" and gave us his usual garbage that the team can win a super bowl with him. wow. Did Philly go down when Foles took over? wow. Did NE tank when Brady got hurt? wow.... we can go on and on with your BS.

how do you know how much say Rex had in drafting Sanchez - and even if he had a say in it what difference does it make or what does that have to do with anything? Sanchez was a consensus top 10 pick according to every talking head that year - every QB selection is a gamble.

of course he is going to deem a guy "his guy" when his old skool rookie contract means he is going to be there for at least the next 4 to 5 years - what do you expect him to say "nah I never really wanted this guy he was forced on me by the GM"

of course Philly didn't go down when Foles took over as he is a good QB as well and when Brady went down they had Matt Cassell who at that time was playing to a very high standard - but please remind me how Indy did when Manning went down or the Packers did when Rodgers was out?

you don't like Rex - I think we all get that but to try and pin all the teams failings on him or to suggest a different coach would have had much more success with these same players is just setting yourself up for more disappointment when the next guy comes in - because its not all on the coach its 90% on the players - and we don't have a lot of good ones, in fact we probably don't have a single top tier player outside of Wilkerson at the moment.

unless or until this team gets a decent QB its going to struggle - and I don't care who you have as the coach that isn't going to change.

I mean look at the teams that have the most success in recent times (in terms of average wins per year): Giants, Patriots, Saints, Packers, Steelers, Chargers, Eagles and Ravens - outside of the Ravens who have relied on an elite D all of those teams have had good to very good QB play - and its that - much more than the identity of their coaching staff - that has resulted in their success.
