Can someone explain to me why they count for a team's overall record, but not their conference record?

I have two ideas why off the top of my head:

1. The conference record is just a means to determine who is in and the order of the tournament itself, so they aren't really needed.

2. Conferences don't want their teams ending up with a different number of games in conference play.

The only reason I ask is that a team's conference record is usually a factor in determining whether or not they make the Big Dance.

They probably weigh the team's performance in the conference tournament on it's own and with a little more strength than just normal conference games, so they probably just consider it unnecessary to have it included in the record. It also goes to what I said about keeping the games played even, so they seperate between A) this is what they did regular season, and B) this is what they did postseason.

As for then why they are included in regular season record, I have no idea. Maybe just the comittee having some sort of magic number requirement for wins a team must have to get in, as a way of slimming the field.

Well, the standard for "getting in" for years was 10 wins, and better than .500 in the conference.

It's postseason. If 2 conf teams meet in the NCAA Tourney it doesn't count for conf records b/c that is postseason as well.

That, I completely understand. But a CONFERENCE tournament is held BY the conference, for the conference, and in the conference.

Instinct tells me they should count as conference games for consideration.
