(Post was originally a top five, but two films I recently viewed surpassed two of the films I originally posted here. I am too lazy to do the write-up on the two new ones, so I'm leaving this at three.)

My three Favorites-

O Brother, Where Art Thou?
(George Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson, John Turturro, Holly Hunter, John Goodman, Charles Durning)
This Coen film is loosely based on "The Odyssey." Three chain gang escapees travel through Depression-era Mississippi in search of a treasure. They meet all sorts of characters on their way.
This here is a highly quotable and enjoyable film.
The blue grass soundtrack is superb (this coming from a rap and classic rock fan, mind you).
Pappy O'Daniel and Delmar O'Donnel- hilarious characters.

Apocalypse Now or Apocalypse Now Redux
(Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Sam Bottoms, Larry Fishburne, Dennis Hopper, Harrison Ford, Albert Hall)
Either version works for me. I personally enjoyed the 49 additional minutes of Redux (pushing the movie close to three and a half hours). True, the dinner with the French dragged. However, it added to the hallucinatory and chaotic nature of the film.
I love the psychedellic, Tangerine Dream-type music here.
As someone who once read and enjoyed mythology, I loved the Odyssey-like nature of the movie.
It is a celebrated film. Won Academy Awards for Cinematography and Sound. Robert Duvall was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. It lost the best picture category to "Kramer vs. Kramer" (which nobody ever puts on their top 10 lists).
Ranked 28th on the AFI Top 100.
This movie captures the psychological terror, the battles, and the chaotic nature of the Vietnam War.
Martin Sheen is Captain Willard, an Army captain assigned to "terminate with extreme prejudice" a renegade colonel. Willard journeys up a river into Cambodia to terminate Colonel Kurtz. What starts as a standard journey becomes more and more terrifying, horrific, and surreal.

The Big Lebowski
(Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, David Huddleston, John Turturro)
That's two Coen films in my top four.
Bridges plays Jeff Lebowski aka "The Dude", a stoner lost in the 1970s who likes to bowl. He is mistaken for a millionaire of the same name. What follows is a kidnapping, a botched payoff attempt, and bowling.
The plot is just an excuse to richly develop strange characters.
The memorable lines here are bountiful.

The Coen Brothers rule. How can you forget their first flick, 'Blood Simple'?! I'm a cinephile. I don't even know where to start...
The Seven Samurai
Taxi Driver
Rosemary's Baby
Repulsion
Harold & Maude
The Bride of Frankenstein
Fanny & Alexander
The Seventh Seal
A Touch of Evil
Too many to list, but let's keep going. :)
I don't believe in snobbery when it comes to art and film, just like I don't believe anyone should be above toilet humor. If you love the medium, you gotta love all the genres and all the crappy stuff, too. I'm a big fan of horror flicks and movies that are so bad they're great; but the movie has to be SO bad it defies description. Horrible acting, horrible diaglogue, horrible special effects. The Green Slime - one of the best worst films ever made. You can see the freakin' string on the guys "space suit" when he's outside the "space ship" (a garden spigot!). Dialogue like, "Get those women and children out of here!" - when there aren't any children. The "threat" is this squeaky, life sized squid/vegetable that stands there and does nothing - except squeak.

I was in a store the other night and I saw something called "The Gingerbread Man" starring Gary Busey. A cookie that kills people!

"Blood Simple" would make my top 100, and maybe top 50. I figure I've seen over 800 movies. I might actually try to figure it out exactly over the course of this year. I'd take a movie review book and go through one letter at a time. I'd do all the movies that start with "A" (probably while watching a MLB game) and write a one-line note next to them.

(At one time I did register for a film class at college. I attended it the first day, but had to drop the class when it conflicted with a class I needed for my major. Later, I considered transferring to Florida State to major in film. So, I like this film stuff, you could say. I can appreciate an arty film as much as a toilet humor movie like "Dumb and Dumber.")

I love lamp.

Waiting...

I bought this on a recommendation from this forum. I did laugh at some things, but this was pretty bad. That Justin Long gave one wooden performance. For those who don't know about this movie- if you like lots of cursing, sex jokes, and no plot, you'll like this.

A video store in my town is shutting down in a couple weeks. All the movies in the store are for sale. I spent at least an hour there on Monday night looking for some hard-to-find movies.
I bought these movies on VHS:
Naked Lunch
The Vanishing (the 1988 original thrilling foreign version; the 1993 Hollywood remake [by the same director] with Kiefer Sutherland and Jeff Bridges is universally acclaimed as mediocre at best)
Heathers (Winona Ryder, Christian Slater)

I haven't seen any of the above (aside from the Hollywood remake of The Vanishing), so I figured I'll get 'em on VHS. If I like 'em, I'll buy the DVDs.
It's better this way, in case I don't like them.
Borders had copies of Criterion Collection DVDs of Naked Lunch and The Vanishing (1988). They were going for $35 and $25, respectively.

As far as DVDs are concerned, I recently bought the Director's Cut of Donnie Darko. I figured I'd throw that weird film up a flagpole and see if it waves.

Today I picked up:
Walk the Line (the two-disc collector's edition)
Vertigo
Mulholland Dr.
Southern Comfort

As a rap fan and a guy who generally does not like love stories, I initially had little interest in Walk the Line. Alas, I ultimately saw it in theaters in February. I highly enjoyed it. Reese Witherspoon must win the Academy Award for Best Actress. She was just that good. Her and Joaquin Phoenix were superb.
(Witherspoon gets my vote for 2nd best ever looking woman in a film, following Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde. Witherspoon is striking with darker hair.)

I was looking at Halliwell's Movie Guide and that book is extremely skimpy on assigning stars to movies with their rating system. They only gave The Wizard of Oz three stars out of four. Return of the Jedi got one star. (I like hard markers.) Over 23,000 movies are reviewed in the book. I was looking at the four star pages towards the end of the book (and saw nothing I disagreed with). I didn't sit there and do the math, but it appeared that they gave four stars, on average, to about four movies per year.
What I'm getting at is Southern Comfort received four stars.

Here's the review from my VideoHound movie book:
A group of National Guardsmen are on weekend maneuvers in the swamps of Louisiana. They run afoul of some of the local Cajuns, and are marked for death in this exciting and disturbing thriller. (Powers) Boothe is excellent in a rare exploration of a little-understood way of life. Lots of blood. If you belong to the National Guard, this could make you queasy.

This is an R rated movie from 1981. It has a superb ending with words from an angry Cajun. The movie was disturbing because it featured white-on-white racism. The film also works as an allegory of the Vietnam War. I found the movie to be equal to or better than Deliverance (also a four star movie) and it does not have a "squealing pigs" scene.

Tremors 2 is funny as hell. It would have been on my list if I had kept going.

My favorite line, from Burt after he destroys a Graboid with a magnum .50 cal round:
